British tourist drowns in front of wife in Goa holiday horror

An elderly British tourist has drowned in front of his wife after being swept away on a beach in India.

The 72-year-old and his wife were swimming at Talpona beach in Canacona, in the state of Goa, on Friday evening when they were carried away by a strong current, police said.

The couple were pulled ashore by life-savers on jet-skis and both were given CPR but while his wife could be resuscitated the British man was confirmed dead after being taken to a local hospital.

The married couple were regular visitors in Goa and were on holiday for 15 days before the husband's death, police added.

Police registered the death as “unnatural” and the body has been taken to a district hospital for an autopsy.

In January a British woman was found on a popular tourist beach in Goa.According to reports, a group of locals found the woman's body against the wall of a church in the tourist hotspot of Agonda, Canacona.

Earlier this month a British woman was also found dead on a popular Caribbean beach along with her husband.

The couple’s bodies were discovered on Paradise Beach in the village of L'Esterre, on the Grenadine island of Carriacou.

It is thought the British woman drowned while trying to save her husband.

Last March two British men also drowned in separate incidents while holidaying in the Maldives.

A 46-year-old man reportedly died while diving at the popular Hammerhead Shark Point off the coast of the atoll of Rasdhoo.

A second British national, aged 65, then drowned in waters off the coast of Rasdhoo.
