A British teenager is fighting for his life after diving into the shallow area of a Magaluf swimming pool and apparently hitting his head. The incident occurred during the early hours of this morning at a beach club in the Majorca party resort.
Reports suggest the 19-year-old, who has not been named, tried to leap headfirst into the pool but the water was just a couple of feet deep. Emergency services were called by staff.
Medics found he had suffered serious injuries and he was rushed to hospital in the island capital Palma after emergency treatment at the scene, according to the Ultima Hora newspaper. The teen is being treated in the trauma unit at the Son Espases hospital.
It is the latest in a spate of tragedies involving young people diving into swimming pools, with some suffering life-changing injuries. There have been deaths when teenagers have attempted to leap from hotel balconies into pools below - commonly known as balconing. However, the circumstances surrounding the latest incident are still unclear.
The Foreign Office has previously issued a warning about the dangers of balcony behaviour to British youngsters, stating: “There have been a number of very serious accidents (some fatal) as a result of falls from balconies. Many of these incidents have involved British nationals and have had a devastating impact on those involved and their loved ones.
“Don’t take unnecessary risks around balconies, particularly if you’re under the influence of drink or drugs. Your travel insurance may not cover you for incidents that take place on a balcony or if you were under the influence of drink or drugs when it happened.
"Always follow the safety advice of your hotel and/or tour operator if staying in a room with a balcony and watch out for friends who may be at risk. Some local councils will impose fines to those caught behaving irresponsibly on balconies or jumping from balconies into swimming pools.”
