Stargazers across Europe were treated to a night of astronomical sights as the peak of the annual Perseid meteor shower followed the finest solar eclipse seen in decades.

The Moon obscured more than 90 per cent of the Sun, representing the greatest extent to which it has been blocked above British skies since the total eclipse of 1999.
