Millions of British workers could soon own Anthropic shares without choosing to. The firm behind Claude filed a confidential draft IPO registration on 1 June. Reports point to a mid-October debut valued up to $2tn (£1.483tn). Pensions using tracker funds would buy it once an index adds it, whatever savers make of the row.
The timing has drawn scrutiny. On 12 September, Anthropic boss Dario Amodei urged AI labs to slow down and accept outside checks, and OpenAI's Sam Altman and Elon Musk backed Amodei within a day. Vice President JD Vance called firms asking politicians to regulate them 'a bit of a Trojan horse', and Donald Trump called the warnings a hoax. Neither mentioned the pension money at stake.
