British public backs private jet ban over flight cuts amid fuel crisis

  • A new poll indicates that two-thirds (66 per cent) of the British public supports restricting private jet travel over cancelling standard passenger flights if fuel shortages arise.
  • The Survation poll, commissioned by green advocacy group Possible, revealed widespread cross-party backing for the measure, including 64 per cent of Labour voters, 70 per cent of Reform supporters, 62 per cent of Conservative voters, 76 per cent of Liberal Democrats, and 67 per cent of Green voters.
  • These findings come as global fuel supplies face increasing pressure due to Iran’s asserted control over tankers in the Strait of Hormuz amidst its ongoing conflict with the US and Israel.
  • Environmental organisations, such as Possible and Transport and Environment (T&E), are calling for the grounding of private jets, noting that their annual fuel consumption in the UK is comparable to 730,000 family holidays to the Mediterranean.
  • While UK ministers state airlines are not currently experiencing supply disruption, a government spokesperson confirmed that 'all options for fuel prioritisation will be considered as part of sensible contingency planning' to address potential future shortages.
