British authorities are facing backlash after a video surfaced showing police officers using their car to stop a runaway cow in Staines-upon-Thames, just outside London. The incident, which occurred on Friday evening, has sparked outrage among animal rights activists and the general public.
According to the Surrey Police force, they were called to the scene after reports of a loose cow posing a threat to the public and causing damage to property. Despite several hours of attempting to capture the animal, officers resorted to using a police car to stop it.
The footage circulating on social media shows the cow being struck by the police vehicle, sustaining a significant leg injury. The animal is currently receiving treatment from a veterinarian.
Home Secretary James Cleverly expressed his concern over the incident, questioning the necessity of such forceful action. The RSPCA, a prominent animal welfare charity, also condemned the use of the police car and vowed to address the matter with the authorities.
Surrey Police has initiated an internal review and referred the case to the Independent Office of Police Conduct for further investigation. Chief Inspector Sam Adcock defended the decision to use the police car, stating that it was a last resort after other methods had failed.
While acknowledging the public outcry, the police emphasized their commitment to ensuring public safety in such situations. The incident has reignited the debate on the appropriate use of force in handling animals and has raised questions about police conduct in similar scenarios.
