HOYLAKE, LIVERPOOL: Nine years ago, when Rory McIlroy won the Open and the PGA Championships in the same year, his then collection of four seemed set to grow fast in a career that was destined to be stellar and legendary. The career has been stellar alright; McIlroy can even lay claim to nearing a legendary status, but the collection of Majors has stalled at four since that amazing year, 2014.
A fifth Major and then more seemed his for the taking. A Career Slam, too, seemed on its way -the Green Jacket being the only missing piece in his cabinet for that. Alas, neither has happened and if it does not happen this week, it will become a decade.
