British No 1 Cameron Norrie books US Open last-16 spot with emphatic straight sets win

Cameron Norrie continued his fine form with a dominant win over Holger Rune to reach the fourth round of the US Open.

The British No 1 got the job done in straight sets, breezing past the 28th seed 7-5 6-4 6-1. Norrie is yet to drop a set at the Flushing Meadows tournament after already crushing both Benoit Paire and Joao Sousa earlier this week.

It's a new personal best on the hard surface in New York for Norrie, who had previously reached the third round in 2020. After reaching the Wimbledon semi-finals, it appears Norrie is finding form at Grand Slam tournaments and he has continued to impress at the US Open, the fourth and final major of the season.

Norrie and Rune exchanged holds and breaks to be tied 5-5 in an error-strewn opening set, but the Brit held on to break the Dane before closing out the set to love, and he quickly established control of the second.

Norrie broke Rune immediately in the opening game of the second set, with his opponent hitting four unforced errors in the game alone. Norrie threatened to run away with the set as he moved into a 4-1 lead, but Rune broke back before holding serve.

However, the Brit remained composed and secured the set by simply going through the motions. He held two break points to take the set 6-4 amid complaints from his teenage opponent.

Rune held serve to open the third set, but that was about as good as it got for the Dane. Norrie won six straight matches - including his seventh break of the match - to ensure he claimed the win without dropping a set.

The World No 9 is proving to be in imperious form, and his compatriot Naomi Broady suggested no male star would want to face Norrie. Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra, she added: "Nobody wants his name against theirs in the draw."

Norrie, the seventh seed, will face either Russian ninth seed Andrey Rublev or Canadian 19th seed Denis Shapovalov in the last 16 at the US Open.
