British hopeful Heather Watson's Wimbledon campaign over after fourth-round defeat

Heather Watson was beaten in straight sets 6-2 6-4 by German player Jule Niemeier on Centre Court on Sunday afternoon.

Watson, British No 4 had enjoyed a special run to the last-16 of her home Grand Slam, her best performance to date at any Grand Slam. However, she came unstuck against Niemeier.

Before the eagerly-anticipated contest, the Centre Court crowd were treated to a special parade from former Wimbledon champion - including Roger Federer, Andy Murray, Billie Jean King, Rod Laver and Bjorn Borg.

However, it didn't inspire Watson to glory as she couldn't get to terms with the German star's strong performance. The unseeded 22-year-old beat No 2 seed Anett Kontaveit in the second round, and illustrated her quality throughout the last-16 clash.

It was a flat first set from Watson, who had been broken twice before falling to defeat easily. Her hopes were raised early on in the second set as she broke early on to go 2-0 ahead.

However, she was unable to capitalise on her momentum, and double-faulted before Niemeier hit straight back on the iconic Centre Court.

Two more double faults in her next service game spelled the end for Watson as her opponent went onto clinch victory in an hour and 17 minutes.

She follows fellow British hopeful Katie Boulter in going out in the fourth round, but the home crowd will be hopeful Cam Norrie can produce the goods against American Tommy Paul on Court One on Sunday afternoon.

Other headline matches on Sunday include Novak Djokovic in action, who takes on Dutch star Tim van Rijthoven later on on Centre Court.
