A British grandad was killed outside a shopping centre in Australia just a day after arriving in the country to visit his family.
John Cunningham, 57, was on holiday with his wife Annmarie when he was struck by a vehicle outside Harbour Town shopping centre on on Queensland's Gold Coast on Wednesday.
The couple, believed to be from the north of England, were reportedly visiting their daughter Leah and children who were staying at a nearby caravan park.
One the day of the incident, the man may have stepped out from behind a bus on the road before he was hit by a Holden Colorado ute, according to reports.
Police said the 19-year-old driver stopped immediately and tried to assist the man, but sadly Mr Cunningham was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the Courier Mail, the young driver was treated for shock at the scene and taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.
Queensland Police said in a statement: "The driver, a 19-year-old Biggera Waters man stopped and rendered immediate assistance to the man ahead of the emergency response, however the pedestrian died at the scene."
The victim's heartbroken wife wrote on Facebook : "My heart is broken, I've lost my best friend."
Mr Cunningham was described by his daughter as "the best dad", as she said: "My heart is completely ripped out; he was the best father I could ever wish for and my friend.
"He was the best grandfather to all his grandchildren and a fantastic husband to my mother.
"We all love you so much that I can't even put into words; I know that you know we love you."
A friend said: "He was the best father and an even better granddad."
