British counter-terror forces are heading to Iraq to train commandos to smash Islamic State terrorists.
They were invited to assist Iraq’s elite “Golden Division” in its fight against the resurgent network.
General Abdul Wahab al-Saadi – head of the Iraq Counter Terror Service – told the Daily Mirror: “We have arranged to have a new team of British counter terror experts here to help with our training. We are giving up our blood to fight Islamic State, we are on the frontline against this threat and are helping protect countries like the United Kingdom.”
It follows his warning last week that his men had uncovered an ISIS plot to attack a public gathering in Britain. As revealed in the Daily Mirror they found evidence during that ISIS in Iraq is conspiring with UK plotters.
In the next few weeks the British will help train the Iraqi commandos to hunt down other ISIS cells.
In our revelations about the threat to the UK we told how Britain is the priority target in Europe for ISIS, along with France, Germany and Belgium.
A security source said: “The effort to stop attacks in the UK is a multi-agency mission involving police, military and intelligence.
“It makes sense to embed trainers within the Iraqi military to ensure local forces have the skills to tackle ISIS at source.”
The MoD said it could not “confirm nor deny tasks of this nature.”
