British Airways' business class meal change sparks passenger anger

British Airways‘s decision to stop providing three-course dinners in its business cabin for late departures has angered frequent travellers.

Business class flights after 9pm will no longer serve three-course meals but will instead provide a reduced selection of main courses and desserts.

On the Club World menu, starters are unavailable and soup, cheese and crackers are two of the four major courses. A chocolate chip cookie is one of the remaining dessert options.

Like other airlines, BA said most passengers had already eaten in the Club Lounge and that most people preferred to sleep at that hour of the night.

BA has introduced a new brunch service — an extended breakfast for lunch meals served on flights departing between 8.30am and 11.29am.

Cheese frittatas, Belgian waffles, and poached eggs on sourdough are now offered as the main in-flight meal for all seat types.

In the past, first class’s main course selections included vegetarian korma, chicken wellington, and grilled halibut. The breakfast tray reportedly would still include an appetiser, dessert, and wine.

Club World clients seated at the back of the aircraft on flights departing after 11am might not be served until approximately 1.30pm. This is because meal services cannot begin until an aircraft reaches cruising altitude — 30,000 feet or above.

“We're incredibly proud of our premium dining experience, which includes a wide range of meal options to suit the preferences of our customers depending on the time of day they're travelling,” a representative said.

“We trialled our new brunch offering with thousands of customers across numerous routes and received extremely positive feedback on both the quality and variety of options offered.”

However, some BA passengers have criticised the changes on social media.

“Just seen this menu for an 11 hour @British_Airways flight GRU-LHR Is it time to bring back #ToFlyToStarve,” one X (formerly Twitter) user said.

Another said: “I love a crack at BA, which genuinely puts the customer last as a set-in-stone corporate policy. But this is a new low. Incredible scenes. As a country with the biggest market in low-cost airlines on the planet, why wouldn't you own the 'premium segment'? FULL BANANAS.”

A third said: “@British_Airways reading some bad press on Club World evening meal service cutbacks. This is a total showstopper for me because I fly late. I will only book code share flights until this is resolved.”

A fourth person said: “@British_Airways how on earth are you serving ‘brunch’ on your Heathrow to Miami flights on Business? Cheese and crackers as a starter followed by a dusty old omelette as main! Shame on you!”
