British number one Arthur Fery has been backed to improve after this year’s Laver Cup experience by Team Europe vice-captain Tim Henman.
A late call-up as an alternate for Team Europe continued an incredible 2026 for Fery after he produced a sensational run to the last four at Wimbledon and in the process jumped into the top 40 after he had been 140 at the start of June.
Even though Fery was not required to play at The O2, the London right-hander was often on the bench to provide support and was praised by compatriot Henman after Team Europe’s 13-5 victory.
“He has been a brilliant part of the team. He has been out on the practice courts and working on his own game but hitting with the rest of the guys,” Henman said.
“When you think about his last 12 months and where he has come from, obviously life-changing Wimbledon getting to the semi-finals, to be around these very top players, it’s such a good experience.
“I am sure he has learnt a lot and he’s been involved in everything. Hopefully this week is another motivating factor to keep him putting the hard work in, keep improving his rankings and be part of the (2027) European Laver Cup team in LA.”
Fery followed up his dream fortnight at the All England Club with a runners-up showing at the Winston-Salem Open last month before he crashed out of the US Open in the first round to 13th seed Lorenzo Musetti after a tough draw.
After successful team events with Great Britain at the Davis Cup and this Laver Cup, the world number 36 will turn focus to the Asian swing on the ATP Tour buoyed by the experience of this weekend in his home city.
“Yeah for me, it’s been an incredible week and an incredible experience to be with these guys, to watch their matches and support from the side,” Fery said.
“It’s an awesome event and happy to be in the team. Hopefully I get to spend more time with these guys for the next years to come.”
A highlight for Fery occurred on Sunday when during lunch with Carlos Alcaraz, the Team Europe duo were joined by 20-time grand slam champion Roger Federer.
Federer founded this event and has been present for every day at The O2 but Alcaraz preferred to keep the conversation between himself, Fery and the Swiss great private.
Alcaraz said: “Arthur and me we were having lunch and all of a sudden Roger came in and was grabbing a plate and having lunch with us. I am not going to say, it was private and I’ll keep our conversation for us, but it’s great.
“I can see Roger sometimes in a tournament when he is around but it’s not a usual thing to spend so much time with him when we’re on Tour.
“The Laver Cup is one of those special things. You get to spend time with Roger much more on court and you’re able to ask him about a lot of things.”
