Britain to be battered by 47mph winds as heavy downpours hit UK from today

Britain is set to be battered by 47mph winds and an inch of rain an hour, as four days of downpours begin today.

Because of multiple low pressure systems rolling off from the North Atlantic, this will push bands of rain over central, southern and northern England throughout Friday - and into the beginning of next week.

The Met Office has warned that around 32mm (an inch) of rain will fall across these areas. It will then clear south-eastward, but many locations still face showers with sunny interludes in between later on.

But despite the arrival of wind and rain, temperatures will still remain average for mid October for much of the UK.

Friday will see a mixed bag of temperatures ranging from 18C in London to 12C in Aberdeen (Met Office)

For today, London will see highs of 18C, while in other parts of the country it will be much cooler. Aberdeen is expected to be a chilly 12C, while it will be 17C in Hull, 17C in Plymouth and 15C in Liverpool.

Meanwhile, overnight and into Saturday morning, southern and north-western areas will see more showers. Drivers should also be aware that a few fog patches will form into the night. But it will be a dry morning for most other areas.

Saturday will be more breezy, with showers across western areas as the downpours enter for the second part of the day.

Brits should also prepare themselves for massive gusts of up to 47mph. The Met Office have said the strong winds are expected to bash the western edge of Britain as the mixed weather rages on.

However, it will be drier in eastern areas, with some sunny spells expected.

Saturday will see varied temperatures, with highs of 17C in Norwich, 17C in London, 17C in Plymouth, 13C in Newcastle and 11C in Aberdeen.

Met Office meteorologist Alex Deakin has warned that the arrival of the wet weather will bring "more persistent rain" up from the south west on Sunday.

Monday will see the arrival of rain in northern areas, while cloud and lingering rain as forecast to hit the south and east.

Tuesday however is expected to bring the end to the four days of downpour, as more settled weather is forecast - with sunnier spells.

However, looking into the long range weather, the Met Office has said that there is uncertain weather for the southwest and northwest.

These areas will have a clear divide, with higher pressures to the northwest bringing more settled weather with overnight fog and frost. But lower pressures in the southwest may see stronger winds and rain.
