South Wales singer Travis George impressed Britain's Got Talent judges with a passionate performance in the show's grand final on Sunday (June 4). The 22-year-old gave a powerful rendition of ‘Stars’ from the musical Les Miserables for his audition.
But his surprise choice of song for his shot at the title was the rousing This Is Me from The Greatest Showman. Originally performed by Keala Settle, the Oscar-nominated song is all about empowerment and self-acceptance.
Reacting to his grand final performance, Alesha Dixon told him: "You wear your heart on your sleeve, you're so passionate and I know how much this means to you." She said she was unsure about the song's vocal arrangement but added: "I love you".
Amanda Holden said: "I feel like you're starring in your own movie this week and I feel like that was a role credits moment. When you hit those big notes it's so, so wonderful and I know there's even more to come from you. I just feel like someone's got to sign you up, someone's got to give you a deal."
Simon Cowell said: "You could have done the obvious thing, which is to sing another Les Mis song, however, to put your twist on one of the best-loved songs in the last five or six years...whatever it is, is amazing. I really like you, I really hope this will change your life for the better. I think you're a nice guy, great singer and that was a great, great performance, to me."
Bruno Toniolo said: "You took this song and gave it a completely different interpretation. Amazing, I loved the fire and the passion."
Travis said: "I don't want to make it all woe is me but as someone who struggled with anxiety...to be at the finals of Britain's Got Talent...unbelievable."
Before his performance, Travis vowed to give the final "every single ounce of my soul". He added: "I live in a little town in south Wales with my mother, I spent all my life thinking I was this kid who couldn't accomplish anything. If I am able to win I will be the happiest person on this planet."
