Britain's Got Talent viewers were treated to a sweet moment where a mother gave up her audition so her daughter could sing, but the moment was soon slammed as 'fake'.
Hopefuls took to the stage on Saturday night for the third round of BGT auditions in the hopes of impressing judges Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon and Bruno Tonioli. Mum Claire took to the stage before announcing to the judging panel and live audience that she was surrendering her audition for her teenage daughter Tia.
The 33-year-old told judges: “She thinks it’s me who’s auditioning. She’s got me through some very hard times in my life and I feel like I owe her, so I’m giving my audition up for my daughter.
"This is my way of saying she’s fabulous because she deserves it and she’s an incredible person.”
Despite not having any prior warning for her audition Tia belted out the Whitney Houston hit I Didn’t Know My Own Strength - a song she credits with helping her get through times when she was bullied “for the colour of my skin”.
While many viewers thought the moment was sweet, others couldn't help but feel the moment was false and scripted. One said: "That mum 'giving up' her audition for her daughter is the biggest load of fake nonsense I have ever seen."
"So a mum gives up her slot at Britains got talent for her daughter!!! What a croc of sh**! Don’t tell me that’s not staged!! #bgt #BritainsGotTalent #SimonCowell #alisha #amandaholden," said another.
A third added: "This whole thing with the mum giving up her audition to her daughter seems SO fake #BGT."
"Bollocks....you have to do pre-auditions. Can't just go on the stage & say you're giving your place to your daughter. All fake & planned. #bgt #BritainsGotTalent," while a fourth said.
Another wrote: "‘She’s never done anything like this before…she usually just sings in the shower,’ says mother of girl who then goes out and sings like a goddess whilst displaying immaculate mic technique and stage-craft. Chinny reck-on. #BritainsGotTalent #BGT."
Despite the fix claims, Tia's audition blew the judges away as Amanda said she “absolutely smashed it” and has a “massive career” ahead of her.
Simon added: “That’s how you do it. I really love moments like this, you didn’t know you were going to audition, your mum set you up, I’ll just sing Whitney Houston then, like it’s normal.
“That’s very sweet what you did for your daughter because I’m guessing without you doing that she wouldn’t have auditioned. I absolutely loved this audition.”
Britain’s Got Talent continues on ITV1 and STV.
