Brit critical after fracturing his spine falling on rocks jumping into sea in Ibiza

A British tourist is in intensive care and is feared to be paralysed after falling on rocks as he jumped into the sea during a trip to Ibiza.

The holidaymaker, believed to be 33, was rushed to a private clinic known as the Nuestra Señora del Rosario Hospital after being stretchered from the water.

The alarm was raised around 4pm after the accident at Cala Salada, a cove of gravel and sand in a closed bay surrounded by pine trees just over two miles from San Antonio.

It is unclear if the Brit, said to have suffered cervical spine fracture, jumped into the water by choice or if he slipped on the rocks.

Local reports have suggested the man's condition is critical in intensive care.

Emergency medical responders were mobilised but Civil Guard officers confirmed they had no information on the incident and said local police employed by San Antonio Town Hall may have attended the scene along with ambulance crews.

Cervical spine fractures can lead to paralysis below the waist.

The stretch of rocks, around 15 feet above the sea, lies between Cala Salada and a neighbouring cove called Cala Saladeta.

Many people have been reported climbing on the rocky area over the years before jumping head first into the sea.

Earlier this month a British holidaymaker died after falling onto rocks in an upmarket Catalan holiday resort.

The 23-year-old man was killed instantly after climbing onto a replica cannon and losing his balance at the site south of Barcelona, in the early hours of Tuesday, police said.

Officers confirmed he was a British tourist and said he was with two other people at the time.

The man was pulled from the water by a passer-by, along with one of the people he was with.

Police were conducting a routine investigation, they said, adding that there was nothing pointing to the death being the result of a crime.

Last month a father was filmed by his horrified family jumping to his death as he hurled himself off a 100ft cliff in a tombstoning stunt.

The holidaymaker, later revealed as a Dutch footballer, was seen standing at the edge of a cliff in Majorca before jumping.

To the horror of his watching wife and son, filming the extreme stunt from a nearby boat, he is seen plummeting towards the sea at the bottom of the cliff.

Tragically, his leap did not have enough momentum to clear the rocky outcrop and instead of splashing safely into the sea, he hits the rocks.
