Bristolians say they are 'over' Covid restrictions as long as the 'NHS isn't overrun'

Boris Johnson looks set to bring forward the date Covid restrictions will end for good in England and Bristolians seem rather pleased.

All Covid regulations, including the need to isolate if you test positive for Covid-19, were originally set to stop on March 24, but now the Prime Minister has announced they could end in two weeks' time, on February 24 instead.

And, while a number of medical professionals and the like believe the move could be dangerous while infection rates are still considerable and Covid is still prominent in the country, Bristolians seem to be among those ready to move on.

The move has supposedly come about, according to the Prime Minister, thanks to the "hard work of the British people", though other countries in the UK and abroad are as of yet not planning to bring forward their own end to restrictions.

Bristol Live took a stroll through the city and spoke to a number of people about their thoughts on Mr Johnson's plans and what they thought about treating Covid-19 similarly to a common cold or flu, as we come out of almost two years of restrictions.

One resident, who simply gave her name as Patsy, told Bristol Live: "I have tried to not follow it all if I'm honest as it has stressed me out. I think though it depends on the individual cases. I know restrictions can affect people's mental health and so it depends. But I think as long as the NHS isn't overrun it should be fine."

Matt Maynard and Joseph Alloway, university students who have come here to study from outside of Bristol, told us that Joseph and other housemates and friends they lived with had just recently overcome Covid.

They said: "We're kind of over restrictions now. The fact that you don't show symptoms but test positive and then have to isolate for a week is really annoying.

"Last year was worse. We started our course last year and we have basically missed out on the uni experience. We came to Bristol specifically because of its music and nightlife but we haven't been able to experience that. It's nobody's fault but just frustrating.

"We made a den in the house during lockdown and lockdown itself put a lot of pressure on our relationship with our neighbours while we looked for things to do, so lifting restrictions and just getting on with things seems right now."

While Ronnie simply said: "I think it's up to the individual. It should be up to the individual."

And Ellen Goldensmith, 23, from Lockleaze said that she feels a lot of restrictions have already been dropped, adding that it feels a bit strange that people won't have to isolate after testing positive recently.

She told Bristol Live: "I'm not worried about it anymore, you just get used to it. I think I had Covid before testing became widely available.

"It feels like we have pretty much gone back to normal. If you have a bad cold, you wouldn't go round your friend's house."

While those residents who spoke to Bristol Live today seemed unanimous in their perspective, those still too anxious to head out to the shops because of Covid-19 may be feeling differently about the proposed plans.
