Bristol school 'devastated' as two pupils die in the same week

The headmaster of a Bristol school where two pupils have died in the same week said the entire school community has been left ‘devastated’.

Jaideep Barot said teachers have been meeting with pupils today to support them following the two tragedies, which are not related.

Neither of the pupils have been named publicly by Bristol Grammar School and Mr Barot has asked parents and pupils to respect the privacy of the families involved.

All staff gathered for a meeting first thing on Monday, to discuss how to break the news to pupils, and support them, following the double tragedy over the past few days.

The first tragedy was announced last Wednesday by Mr Barot in a letter to parents. It's understood the boy had sadly passed away following a long illness.

Then on Saturday, Mr Barot wrote to parents with more heartbreaking news from the school.

He said that the 'multi-agency team' had informed the school of the death of one of its pupils.

School leaders and teachers at Bristol Grammar School have been sharing support organisations and website as they seek to support pupils in the coming days.

One organisation suggested by the school is the Young Minds website, which offers support and resources to help children and families through bereavement and trauma, which also has a parent phone line and a webchat.

They also shared the Child Bereavement UK website, and the local charity Winston’s Wish, which also deals with helping bereaved children.

A spokesperson for Bristol Grammar School told Bristol Live: “The school community is devastated at the loss of two of our pupils.

“We are focussed on supporting the families involved as well as our pupils, parents and staff at this tragic time,” he added.
