A Bristol car park has reopened today (Monday, April 11) after it closed in 2019 for major repairs and refurbishment work - which were designed to give it a new lease of life for another 10 years.
The long-stay West End Car Park in Jacob’s Wells Road was one-of-two car parks near the city centre that were closed for structural repairs originally expected to cost £2million. However, in January it was revealed that “unforeseen” problems encountered during repairs to West End had bumped up the cost to at least £3.2million.
The other car park that closed for repair in October 2019 was Temple Gate Car Park in Chatterton Square. It has since re-opened after the repairs were completed with no major issues at a cost of about £600,000, not far off the sum of £500,000 budgeted.

In 2019 then cabinet member for transport Kye Dudd, said: “The West End car park structure may not be viable after the next 10 years so we are looking at possible redevelopment options for the site. But until we have a long term plan these are the best options going forward.”
The repairs incurred extra costs after contractors discovered the car park was not built properly and needed “propping and support”, according to the report released in January. It stated: “This project has been very challenging and £1.36m of additional capital (which includes a £300,000 contingency) is required to fully complete the West End works and re-open the car park to the general public."
Bristol City Council tweeted this morning confirming: "West End car park is reopening today following a programme of essential repairs. You’ll need to enter and exit the long-stay car park from Jacobs Wells Road for now, while we finish off repairs to the Upper Berkeley Place access bridge."
