Bristol is now home to its first all-vegan Indian restaurant and takeaway based on Gloucester Road. Vegan India is opening this weekend (March 17) offering meat-free versions of classic curry house dishes.
Vegan India is the plant-based counterpart of Tikka Express, which operates from 190 Stapleton Road in Easton. The takeaway outlet first started offering a vegan delivery service in 2021 and decided to open a new restaurant in Bishopston, taking over the site of the former burger bar Atomic Burgers.
In February, the Easton site confirmed it would be ditching Tikka Express and going entirely vegan, changing its name to Vegan India. The curry house is now preparing to welcome its first customers at the Gloucester Road restaurant.

Making a statement on Facebook, Juwel Talukder, owner of Vegan India, said: “Thank you all for your support last two years and we are really grateful to you. We are dedicated to serve our vegan community with delicious Indian food.
“It is a great moment for us and we are really proud to open a vegan restaurant. With your help and support we will try our best to give you the best Indian food and service.”
The restaurant menu has yet to be released but takeaway dishes feature a huge variety of starters including onion bhajis, vegan buffalo wings, keema chat and chana puri. The main dishes include a long list of chef’s specials such as butter chicken and lamb tikka masala, all made with a mock meat.
Vegan India also had a range of traditional curry house dishes that can be customised with a choice of tofu, vegetables or many different fake meats. It also offers the usual rice, bread and sundries as accompaniments.
The new restaurant will be open seven days a week from 4.45pm until 10.30pm.
