Bristol Rovers put big screen up for sale as they wait on planning for proposed new South Stand

Bristol Rovers have put their big screen up for sale as the club prepare to construct a new South Stand in that area of the Mem.

The big screen was stationed in the corner of the ground where the old South Stand met the East Stand in May 2019 after a fraught process in which Rovers had to wait 11 months between purchasing and installing it to when it was operational, however, it has served the club for the last four seasons.

At the recent Marcus Stewart charity match it was the only structure remaining behind the goal at that end of the ground and it was first considered that Rovers would be moving it to another area of the Mem.

But it now seems the club are intent on replacing the screen which is used as an advertising tool, to show the team line-ups and for broadcasting highlights before a match, as well as acting as scoreboard and to show the time during a game.

On a post on the social networking site LinkedIn, Rovers have advertised the availability of the 8m x 4m screen for clubs looking to make ground improvements.

“As part of the work we are doing at the stadium this summer, we have agreed to upgrade our digital match day experience, as such we are going to be looking for a new home for our giant screen,” the post states. “The screen measures 8m x 4m and has been operated by the team from Techfront UK for the last four seasons.

“If you are looking at stadium improvements this summer and would like to take this off our hands, please get in contact with Head of Sales, David Bright.”

Rovers have continued to clear the area where the South and South West Stands used to be, with the remaining advertising hoardings taken away in preparation for when they can start work on building the intended new L-shaped structure which will boost capacity by around 2,600.

The Gas have begun selling 2023/24 season tickets for the new stand, but are yet to receive planning approval from Bristol City Council. The club maintain their application for planning permission has been submitted, but is still to appear on the council’s public planning portal. The club hope to open the stand in time for the start of the new campaign, with Rovers’ first home game likely to fall on the weekend August 12-13.

In his final programme notes of the season before their fixture against Bolton, CEO Tom Gorringe wrote: “Given the schedule we have contingency plans in place should any delays occur. We will also be working with planning, building regs and our Safety Advisory Group (SAG) to ensure the project runs as smoothly as possible and is signed off for supporter usage at the earliest opportunity.”
