Bristol Rovers player ratings vs Oldham Athletic: Gas disappoint but Jaakkola deserves credit

Anssi Jaakkola - 8

Was given no chance by two ruthless Davis Keillor-Dunn finishes, and Rovers had the big Finn to thank for keeping the Oldham tally down. A superb top-corner save denied Dylan Bahamboula's long-ranger and he made another acrobatic stop in the second half to repel Junior Luamba.

Luca Hoole - 4

Had chances to effect the game in possession and Rovers needed more from him in those moments. Good chances to create something on the right flank were not capitalised on by the teenager.

James Connolly - 5

A late call up into the XI may have been unsettling and there were plenty of difficult moments but Connolly did get his head on some threatening crosses and he handled the lively Junior Luamba in some dangerous moments.

Cian Harries - 3

A really difficult night that started horribly. His missed clearance led to the goal opening goal. He was inaccurate and overly direct on the ball when Rovers needed to be more patient.

Nick Anderton - 4

Should have put in a more convincing clearance in the opening minute before the goal and he appeared to lose the battle for first contact with Carl Piergianni at the corner which led to the second.

Sam Finley - 4

Uncharacteristically erratic in possession. Wayward passes put the Gas under pressure in the first half. Struggled to get anything going all night.

Paul Coutts (c) - 3

Gave the ball away far too often and had a really difficult night trying to progress the play, which was one of many factors in a stuttering performance. His yellow card for a rash challenge after clumsily ceding possession to Bahamboula summed up an evening where Rovers' key players lacked poise.

Elliot Anderson - 4

Some flashy touches of the ball but not enough substance. A learning night for the youngster.

Antony Evans - 5

Was out of sorts and exited the game on 24 minutes, presumably with an injury.

Harvey Saunders - 5

Maximum effort throughout the contest, but he struggled to hold possession when Rovers played long, albiet it isn't his natural game. Needed more substance from his efforts. Not helped by poor service all night.

Aaron Collins - 5

Drew an excellent save from Danny Rogers at 1-0 and he provided the assist for Rovers' goal, but he struggled to impose himself in the second period with Oldham's defence holding firm. A lack of guile in the approach play hampered him in the second half.

Substitutes

Sam Nicholson (for Evans on 24') - 6

Finished expertly to get Rovers back in the game just before the break and he was a source of danger on the left, but when he got his head up he had very little to work with.

Luke Thomas (for Anderton on 65') - 5

Lacked conviction, wasting possession and good chances to cross.

Harry Anderson (for E Anderson on 74') - 5

Probed the defence and gave Rovers some scraps to work with, but it was not enough.

Not used: Jed Ward, Pablo Martinez, Sion Spence, Glenn Whelan.
