Bristol Rovers player ratings vs Burton Albion: Lack of confidence telling as Gas lose again

Ellery Balcombe - 5

Beaten one-on-one for the equaliser before his defence failed to clear their lines for the second.. Caused frustration aplenty with some unconvincing punches, but he followed that up with a pair of saves that kept the deficit at one. However, his blushes were spared by the offside flag when he spilt the ball at the feet of Dale Taylor from Deshi Oshilaj's long-range shot.

James Gibbons - 7

A sliced shot out for a throw-in did not indicate a beautiful cross was to follow from Gibbons' right boot soon after, but his delivery was superb after being slid to the byline by Sinclair, putting the chance on a plate for Marquis. Almost had a second assist when he teed Collins up for a shot that flew narrowly wide. Withdrawn with Rovers chasing the game, but he had a decent outing.

Jarell Quansah - 5

Missed a good chance from a corner just moments before the equaliser, which saw him caught under a long ball and Burton profited. Cleared a shot off the line but Winnall stuck it away straight after to make it 2-1. Rovers' most composed defender on the ball but his wait for a Gas win goes on.

James Connolly - 4

A tough ask leading this young defence as a 21-year-old himself, but he had a difficult afternoon. A tough physical challenge in the wind with Burton playing long often, but he and his defence needed to do much more to clear their lines. The first goal was soft and the second one, although there were suggestions of a foul on Quansah, was worse. Taken off in the final 10 minutes with Hoole seen as a more progressive option on the ball.

Calum Macdonald - 5

Did not have a debut to remember as the Gas let a lead slip, but he did settle in at left-back after a nervy start and played a couple of searching balls forward for Collins.

Grant Ward - 6

Screened the back four well for the most part and had to mop up a lot of second balls with Burton going long often. Taken off as the Gas chased the game.

Lamare Bogarde - 5

Ineffective in the midfield after a strong showing in midweek and gave away a few needless fouls before being withdrawn in the second half.

Antony Evans - 5

Started strongly and was involved in several moments of good build-up play. He also delivered a wicked corner that ought to have made it 2-0. However, he and most of his teammates were poor after the interval with Rovers' build-up play dying.

Scott Sinclair - 5

Took up great areas in the first half and played an important part in the opening goal, but he drifted out of the game and a ballooned shot late on summed up a miserable second half.

Aaron Collins (c) - 6

Burton could not contain him when he got on the ball in and around the box and he would have been deeply frustrated to see a shot zip wide of the bottom corner by the narrowest of margins in the first half. That chance at 1-0 proved to be decisive as Rovers did not capitalise on their immense momentum and the game spiralled out of control.

John Marquis - 6

Marked his return to the starting XI with an opening goal, expertly finishing off Gibbons' fine cross with a diving header. Gave Rovers a physical focal point, but he became less and less effective as the game went on and Rovers' build-up play collapsed.

Substitutes

Harry Anderson (for Bogarde on 60') - 6

Brought fresh intensity on the right flank and was involved in some of the few moments of promise the Gas created in the second half.

Paul Coutts (for Ward on 60') - 5

Replaced Ward in the pivot and moved the ball efficiently, but Rovers could not build up a head of steam.

Lewis Gordon (for Macdonald on 60') - 5

Saw plenty of the ball but did not make great use of it.

Josh Coburn (for Gibbons on 71') - 5

Could not make an impression on a stubborn defence.

Luca Hoole (for Connolly on 79') - 6

Brought a bit more security at the back as the Gas tried to throw men forward.

Not used: James Belshaw, Glenn Whelan.
