MK Dons have sacked head coach Liam Manning and his coaching staff on the eve of their trip to the Mem to face Bristol Rovers in the Papa John’s Trophy.
The Dons suffered their 13th defeat of the League One campaign on Saturday, losing 2-1 to Fleetwood Town, and have fallen to 23rd in the table, six points from safety, just seven months after finishing third and reaching the play-offs.
With the departures of star players Harry Darling and Scott Twine there was an acceptance this season would be more challenging in trying to match that achievement but they’ve struggled throughout. Assistant head coach Chris Hogg, assistant first-team coach David Wright and goalkeeper coach Darren Smith have also left the club.
Captain and defender Dean Lewington will now take charge of the team for Tuesday’s last 16 tie in the Papa John’s with Rovers manager Joey Barton expected to field a strong line up as the Gas are just three games from Wembley.
"Liam, Chris and David have worked tirelessly over the last 16 months and we are hugely grateful for their dedication as well as what they were able to achieve on and off the pitch, particularly last season," said sporting director Liam Sweeting.
"As well as being thoroughly professional and dedicated, they have represented the club impeccably throughout their time with us. Our thanks as well to Darren, who stepped in to help us during a difficult period.
"Ultimately, given the position we find ourselves in, our decision now is to change the leadership and my full focus is on identifying and appointing the right person to, first and foremost, guide us out of this current situation, before then taking us forward. That process begins immediately."
Manning took charge of MK Dons in August 2021 having previously worked with the Ipswich Town academy, West Ham Under-23s and Belgian side Lommel SK, and the 37-year-old’s initial success had seen him earmarked as one of the brightest young coaches in the country and discussed for Championship jobs.
Rovers have beaten their forthcoming opponents already this season as Antony Evans’ penalty secured a 1-0 win at Stadium MK in October.
