Bristol Rovers have received a boost, should they still consider Accrington Stanley’s Matt Butcher a target, as Portsmouth have pulled out of the race to sign the midfielder on a free transfer.
The Portsmouth News report that Pompey manager Danny Cowley is focused on other areas of the field and defensive midfielder Butcher, who is available on a free transfer, won’t be experiencing a homecoming having grown up in Denmead, just outside the city.
Reports earlier this summer indicated that Rovers were in the market for the 25-year-old along with Fleetwood Town and Bradford City, and Bristol Live understands that Butcher is one of a number of options being explored in that particular role, following the exit of Glenn Whelan at the end of last season.
