Bristol Rovers' game with MK Dons postponed as football pays its respect to the Queen

Bristol Rovers' match with MK Dons has been postponed after the Premier League and EFL announced all games across the country this weekend will be rescheduled in respect of the Queen.

The decision was made following a meeting on Friday morning between the government and various sporting bodies this morning. While the government advised games should be postponed, they confirmed the final decision would come down to the sporting bodies.

A statement posted by the EFL read: "Further to discussions on Friday morning it has been determined that all EFL fixtures from 9-10 September will be postponed as a mark of respect by the National Sport to the passing of HRH Queen Elizabeth II.

"This is aligned with the approach that the Premier League and the FA will take with their competitions this weekend.

"Further information, in respect of how football, Clubs and their supporters will commemorate Her Majesty’s reign will be confirmed at an appropriate point.

"Details regarding rearranged games will be announced in due course."

The National League followed suit by postponing their weekend round of fixtures with the statement "all National League System, FA Trophy, and grassroots fixtures scheduled for this weekend will not take place as a mark of respect."

Buckingham Palace announced the death of the Queen on Thursday evening. The EFL shortly confirmed after that Friday's fixture between Burnley and Norwich had been postponed.

Announcements over future fixtures have yet to be confirmed. There is a full EFL fixture list during the week with City travelling to Norwich as the UK begins a national mourning process.

According to journalist Richard Buxton, next Saturday's top flight fixtures are "also expected to be postponed in line with the Queen's state funeral." That is likely to be relevant across the EFL.

He adds: "If funeral is confirmed for the Monday, as has been claimed, then no obligation for the weekend games to be deferred but entirely at PL’s discretion."

It's also suggested policing wasn't a factor in postponing this weekend's Premier League and EFL games as it came purely down as a mark of respect for the Queen.
