Zain Westbrooke has left Bristol Rovers for Stevenage, the clubs announced on Monday.
The midfielder has joined Paul Tisdale's side on loan until the end of the season.
The 25-year-old has endured a frustrating season, making just one League Two start for Joey Barton's Gas and nine appearances in all competitions.
He has reunited with Tisdale at the Lamex Stadium. Tisdale managed Rovers for 19 games in the 2020/21 campaign.
Westbrooke is contracted at the Mem until 2023 after signing from Coventry City in 2020.
He started in the FA Cup defeat to Peterborough on January 8 but he was left out of the squad as Rovers beat Hartlepool on Saturday.
The midfielder was one of Rovers' higher earners and his exit could give Barton room for manoeuvre in the transfer market.
Westbrooke has made 57 appearances for the Gas, scoring four goals and registering nine assists.
He was available to leave Rovers in the summer, with Barton offering him the chance to pursue other opportunities, but a move was not forthcoming.
He will be ineligible to play when the Gas visit Stevenage in February as part of the loan agreement.
Rovers hope the player impresses at Stevenage, effectively putting himself in the shop window for a permanent move in the summer.
A reintegration at Rovers at that point feels unlikely, with the manager preferring other midfield options since he was able to build his own squad last summer.
