Police say a fatal accident in the early hours of yesterday was not as a result of a police chase. Tragically a man aged in his 20s died after a car entered the River Avon in Bristol.
Emergency services responded after the vehicle went through railings alongside the river in York Road, Bedminster, and entered the water.
A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Constabulary told Bristol Live: "We can confirm that the mandatory IOPC referral is a result of police being in the proximity at the time of the incident. There was no police pursuit."
Two other occupants in the car received medical attention. Road closures were put in place along York Road, Coronation Road and Clarence Road while emergency services were at the scene and an investigation strived to ascertain how the car came to be in the water.
