Bristol fire: Huge blaze at We The Curious science museum as smoke billows across city

A huge fire broke out at a science and arts museum in Bristol sending plumes of smoke billowing across the city.

Staff and members of the public at We The Curious were evacuated as police closed off multiple city centre roads and dozens of firefighters rushed to the scene.

Video footage and images shared on social media show thick grey smoke filling the air from the museum with reports of fire engines and police at the scene.

Onlookers gathered to watch as sirens blared and the emergency services entered from the back of the building, Bristol Live reports.

40 firefighters were on the scene, with Avon Fire and Rescue Service initially receiving an emergency call at 2.05pm.

A spokesperson for the service told the Mirror: "We received a call from We The Curious in central Bristol to reports of a fire on or in the roof space.

"We deployed seven fire engines and a number of specialist resources - and 40 firefighters."

He said the crews were on the scene within three minutes and the fire was under control by around 3.10pm.

No injuries have been reported.

The cause of the fire remains unclear.

Drones were then sent up around the roof as the service sought visual proof the fire was completely out.

The museum has suffered fire and water damage, while it's servers were down on Saturday night.

The spokesman said at around 3.30pm that resources would likely start to be pulled away from the scene, though some personnel would remain for a couple more hours.

A number of road closures remained in place towards Saturday evening.

Police officers blocked access to Anchor Road by parking in front of the junction to the route.

The fairground in Millennium Square also closed.

Museum staff and police officers were helping direct people away from the square and towards Pero's bridge.

A spokesperson for We The Curious said it's staff and visitors were quickly evacuated after the fire broke out.

"Our building has sustained fire and water damage, and some of our key server systems are also affected, so we’re currently without our phone or email systems.

"We’ll be closed on Sunday 10 April whilst we assess the damage and make a plan for the next few days, so we’ll post further updates on this page once we know more."

They said anyone due to visit over the weekend will be contacted by staff once the system is back online to rearrange.

The statement added: "We’d like to say a massive thank you to our incredible staff for their hard work and dedication today, to our visitors for their understanding, and to the Avon Fire and Rescue team and police for their swift action.

"We’d also like to say a big thanks to Bristol Hotel, SS Great Britain and Bristol Old Vic for supporting our wedding party today."

Neighbouring attraction Bristol Aquarium said: "Our thoughts are with We The Curious today who have done a tremendous job evacuating after a fire incident.

"For Bristol Aquarium visitors, access is now restricted outside of our building for today to protect the area. Tickets purchased online are valid for 6 months."

We The Curious is a science and arts centre and educational charity in Bristol, England, and a tourist attraction of the city.
