A Bristol-based coffee roaster is launching a new house espresso this Earth Day (April 22), for which a proportion of the proceeds will go toward supporting sustainable farming and agroforestry projects.
From this weekend, coffee roasters Odd Kin, which has a café on Whiteladies Road, will add Greenhouse to its range of speciality roasts. Odd Kin says Greenhouse is a single origin from Peru, featuring "buttery macadamia, butterscotch and sweet white grape notes."
Since the platform’s foundation in 2010, over 3 million trees have been planted by local farmers across Africa, South America, Asia and Europe. Working with Treedom, the Odd Kin Coffee Forest plans to plant one tree per 5 kg of Greenhouse coffee sold and has already reached ten trees with a goal of 100 by the end of the year.

Odd Kin’s founder, Sam Smith, said: “To get a coffee bean from plant to cup is a long process with many hands involved, and we want to be sure that everyone has been treated right, from the farmer to the coffee drinker.
"Ethical sourcing and sustainable growing are key focuses for us. We remain committed to finding ways to support not only the farmers we work with but all producers and the communities they support within regions most vulnerable to and affected by climate change.
"These producers continue to face immense pressures at all ends. By partnering with Treedom, we hope to raise awareness among coffee drinkers of the positive environmental and socio-economic impacts agroforestry can make."
Odd Kin is sourcing its beans for Greenhouse importer Volcafe which works with Peruvian coffee growers to tackle issues like deforestation and soil infertility.
Sam added: “As a roaster, we are responsible for ensuring best practice when it comes to buying coffee and ensuring the farmers we source from have been fairly compensated for their craft. We are also responsible for taking steps to ensure long-term stability for the coffee industry by working towards a better climate future.
"We’re working to reduce our environmental impact by using fully recyclable, carbon-neutral packaging and reusable delivery tubs for wholesale partners. We use the most energy-efficient espresso machine on the market, Victoria Arduino Eagle 1, consuming 30% less energy than a comparable traditional 2-group model, as well as being made from 97.5% recyclable materials.
"Through all of these approaches, we hope to shine a light on the progress that can and should be made at each stage - from growing to processing, sourcing to transporting, packing to roasting and distributing.”
