Bristol City striker Saikou Janneh is poised to join Cambridge United on a permanent deal after being left out of the Robins' first-team squad following their return to pre-season training.
Janneh posted a picture of the Robins High Performance Centre on Snapchat on Monday with the message, "it has been a pleasure", and Bristol Live understands he’s set to sign for League One Cambridge for a minimal fee.
The 22-year-old was signed by City in 2018 via Bath City and Clevedon Town but after an impressive loan spell with Torquay United in 2018/19 under Gary Johnson has been unable to make a consistent first-team breakthrough.
Janneh gave notice of his promising talent by scoring 18 goals in 34 games for the Gulls as a teenager as they earned promotion from the National League South.
After another less successful stint at Plainmoor, he did make his Robins debut towards the end of the 2020/21 campaign with substitute appearances against Luton Town and Brentford before scoring a brace in a League Cup first round tie against Forest Green Rovers,
But he experienced an underwhelming loan in League One working with Steve Cotterill at Shrewsbury Town, failing to score in 13 appearances across all competitions, only one of which were as a starter and now isn’t part of Pearson’s plans for the Robins moving forward.
With one year remaining on his contract at Ashton Gate, following the bumper four-year deal he signed in 2019, City have decided to move him on.
Cambridge finished 14th in League One last season under head coach Mark Bonner, having achieved promotion the previous season with former City loan striker Barry Corr among the coaching staff at the Abbey Stadium.
