Bristol City striker rewarded for sensational form with first international call-up

Bristol City striker Tommy Conway has been rewarded for his sensational start to the 2022/23 season by earning a first international call-up with Scotland Under-21s.

Conway has scored six goals in 10 games, and added two assists, in all competitions to become an integral player for the Robins as they have enjoyed an impressive first month this campaign, lying fourth in the Championship and into the third round of the Carabao Cup.

The 20-year-old made his City debut in 2021, soon after Nigel Pearson was first appointed, but has had to bide his time in the Under-23 set-up and on the periphery of the first-team before taking his chance in emphatic fashion with a double against Coventry City in the Carabao Cup on his first start.

The Scottish Football Association were alerted to his availability last month, as Taunton-born Conway qualifies through a grandparent, and he has subsequently been named in Scott Gemmill’s squad for their friendly double-header against Northern Ireland on September 22 and 25.

Conway is one of 11 new players in the 23-man group which also includes former Bristol Rovers loanee Elliot Anderson, now back with parent club Newcastle United.

"It's a really exciting time and a big responsibility to work with largely a new group of players and give them that opportunity to maximise their potential,” Gemmill said.

"The time they are with us may be small but it's a really important part of their development.

"We have to get that balance right between trying to help the players develop as much as they can and push towards the full squad but at the same time, we try to be as competitive as we can be and to be competitive we have to be organised.

"These games against Northern Ireland will be excellent preparation for the competitive matches next year, and particularly for the new players, it's a chance to show them how we work and what's expected of them tactically.

"With being a Scotland youth international, there's a lot of responsibility that comes with that. It's a big thing for these players coming to play for their country and the experience has to be good for them as well so we have to get everything right."

Conway has been with City since the age of seven and signed a new three-year contract over the summer.

He is the second City forward to earn an international call-up this week with Antoine Semenyo named in the Ghana squad for their forthcoming friendlies against Brazil and Nicaragua.
