Bristol City's Tommy Conway on his ambition to sink England as he reflects on 'surreal' season

Tommy Conway has already pencilled September 12, 2023 into his calendar in a bid to achieve his next ambition.

The Bristol City star is enjoying a season beyond his wildest imagination after breaking through into Nigel Pearson's first-team and sitting at the top of the club's scoring charts with nine goals.

After opening his account for the season with a brace in the Carabao Cup victory over Coventry, Conway netted his first in front of the home faithful in the 2-0 victory over Luton just six days later. Beaming from ear to ear, the 20-year-old went on a run of five in six league games to repay Pearson's trust in his ability and reap the benefits of his hard work.

Conway's form was later rewarded with his call-up for the Scotland Under-21 side in September which he qualifies for through a grandparent. He got his first taste of international football in the double-header of matches against Northern Ireland and played the full 90 minutes in Scotland's home defeat to Iceland on Thursday evening.

The fact Conway is wearing the No9 for his country is a testament to his "surreal" last four months but the City striker has loftier ambitions - to continue his form and force his way into Steve Clarke's senior set-up. It doesn't end there, however.

England and Scotland meet next year to mark the 150th anniversary of the oldest rivalry in football at Hampden Park in Glasgow. For Conway, there will be no better way to announce his arrival on the big stage.

Speaking to BBC Sport, the 20-year-old said: "It was quite a surreal feeling to put a Scotland shirt on and obviously to wear the number nine as well was quite a dream, especially being a striker so I think I just want to keep doing that more and more and hopefully get my first goal soon.

"(The ambition is to) just to break into the Scottish first team as soon as possible, to be honest. Keep doing what I'm doing at this level, at Championship level and I don't think that's not achievable so hopefully, I can achieve that in the near future."

When asked about the 'golden nugget' of featuring in the game next year, Conway replied "Yeah and scoring the winner at Hampden would be a dream for sure."

To put into context his rise into the City side and his international appearances, it was only two years ago when the forward was lining up for Bath City. He scored for fun in the Under-23s last season but made just four substitute appearances from the bench.

"Before the start of the season I wasn't ahead of myself," Conway added. "I didn't really think I was going to be doing what I'm doing now necessarily, so obviously after the first few games with Bristol City, I then broke into the side and started 10 or 12 games on the bounce and I didn't expect that in pre-season for sure.

"To score goals along with it, I think is just a surreal moment and I can't really put it into words, to be honest with you.

"It's a dream really to come all the way through, ever since a seven-year-old to go all the way through the academy and playing in the first team and almost making a name for yourself and then the fans know about you and then everything like that."

Conway couldn't resist a grin when he was asked about the song City fans have adopted for him taken from the hit anthem 'Don't You Want Me' by The Human League.

"When the fans sing it, hairs stand up on the back of your neck and I think my mum and dad enjoy it too, so yeah, that's my song."
