Bristol City predicted team vs Hull City: One change with some set for Ashton Gate swansong

Bristol City's final home game of the season may not be the standout match on the Championship fixture list this weekend but it has the potential to serve up an exciting contest.

It's 17th versus 18th at Ashton Gate with Hull looking to leapfrog the Robins one spot in the league going into the final set of matches next Saturday before the season draws to a close.

Apart from that, there's little to play for and while that could sometimes serve up a dross encounter with two sides already thinking about their Pina Coladas (or Red Stripe) on the beach, this clash has the ingredients to deliver an entertaining showing.

Both sides head into the match coming off the back of some end of season form. City are undefeated in their last four having picked up wins on the road at Stoke and Derby while holding Sheffield United to a well-earned point.

Hull, under relatively new head coach Shota Arveladze, have won three of their last four including a surprise victory away at Middlesbrough and a 3-0 win over Reading in their last outing.

Four years ago, the two sides battled out a 5-5 draw in BS3 and at the risk of jinxing it and being a 0-0 here's how we think City will shape up for the contest.

Goalkeeper and defence

No prizes for guessing who will be in goal with Dan Bentley to see out the season between the sticks. He was unfortunate not to keep a rare clean sheet in his last outing in the 3-1 victory over Derby with Craig Forsyth heading in from close range.

His position has been cemented in goal with a number of encouraging performances following his return but it remains to be seen whether Saturday will be his final appearance at Ashton Gate ahead of an uncertain summer.

The back three have also picked themselves in Tomas Kalas' absence and have strung together a number of confident performances. Rob Atkinson's form has been impressive while Timm Klose's experience in the middle has proved important alongside Robbie Cundy.

Both Klose and Cundy will head into the game unsure of their short-term futures with their contracts expiring in the summer and it will be interesting to note their reaction at the full-time whistle to supporters as to whether it will be a permanent goodbye.

At wing-back, Alex Scott has been declared fit after breaking his nose in the last outing and will likely take the spot at right wing-back where he has started the last four matches.

There was also positive news regarding Jay Dasilva's ankle injury that ruled him out of the win over Derby. Manager Nigel Pearson confirmed he is fit to face Hull and will slot at left wing-back having made that position his own following his comeback into the team around the New Year.

Ayman Benarous slotted in the unfamiliar position last week and put up a decent showing but the midfielder is likely to be back on the bench against the Tigers.

Cam Pring and Zak Vyner are also likely to miss out on the matchday squad for the third successive game. Pearson was asked about Pring's lack of involvement on Thursday and which he provided no assurances that he will feature between now and the end of the season with Duncan Idehen favoured at centre-back.

George Tanner will also be pushing for minutes having recovered from a hamstring injury and despite travelling with the squad last weekend, wasn't named among the substitutes.

Midfield

Coming into the fixture on the back of a victory, Pearson is unlikely to make many changes to his side and that includes his two trustee central midfielders.

Matty James has been a mainstay in the side following his injury comeback in March, playing the full 90 minutes in City's last eight matches. His form has improved during those run of matches and he produced a terrific cross last week to assist Klose's header to ease the nerves in the 3-1 victory over Derby.

He'll almost certainly start alongside Joe Williams who Pearson is favouring ahead of Han-Noah Massengo towards the end of the season.

Williams' fitness following a string of hamstring injuries has proven a problem throughout the season but he came through the game against the Rams unscathed and that will be enough encouragement for Pearson to start him once again.

Although Massengo's future beyond the summer is up in the air with his contract expiring in 2023, he'll be hoping to get himself on the Ashton Gate field for what could be the final time.

It could also be one of the main reasons why Pearson hasn't favoured selecting him from the start in recent weeks, as he continues to look towards next season. Massengo produced a solid display in Williams' absence against Sheffield United but found himself back on the substitute bench in the following fixture.

Andy King is also likely to be on the substitute bench after he made a three-minute cameo, his first in three months, against Derby in the last fixture although Callum O'Dowda is expected to miss out on the matchday squad.

Depending on who is on the bench, Pearson could be flexible with his midfield options throughout the game and could potentially move Scott into midfield with Tanner replacing him at wing-back.

Strikers

There was some high praise from Derby manager Wayne Rooney last week who, according to Pearson, said he had one of the best-attacking outfits in the Championship.

It's difficult to argue with that especially after Andi Weimann scored his 20th goal of the season last weekend. The Austrian will also be buoyed by deservedly winning the club's Player of the Season award on Thursday and will hope to sign off his season at Ashton Gate with another strike on his tally in the No10 position.

Antoine Semenyo had eight shots against the Rams, more than in any other game he has played this season, and was rewarded with a brilliant finish into the far corner with his left foot.

That notched his season tally to seven and although it is a steep order now, he'll still have hopes of hitting double figures for the season - especially if he continues to show the form he produced in the victory over Derby.

Chris Martin produced a brilliant assist for Weimann in the last game and continues to be the glue that is keeping the lethal strikeforce together.

Pearson knows what threat they can pose and likewise with opposition manager Shota Arveladze who pinpointed their prowess ahead of the game. He said: "The front three have scored 37 goals this season, (they're involved in) almost all the goals, assists - they are dynamic and strong. It's difficult to play against them because they make a game, they make the goals."

Nahki Wells is likely to be on the substitute bench again alongside young strikers Sam Bell and Tommy Conway. Bell in particular will be hoping to get his opportunity in attack following his difficult cameo at wing-back last weekend.

Bristol City (3-4-1-2): Bentley; Cundy, Klose, Atkinson; Scott, James, Williams, Dasilva; Weimann; Martin, Semenyo
