Bristol City manager Nigel Pearson blasts referee's performance after conceding late equaliser

Bristol City manager Nigel Pearson has risked the wrath of the FA again after blasting the referee's performance in the last-gasp 2-2 draw with Preston.

Pearson was particularly angry with the decision not to award Cam Pring a free-kick in the build-up to the late equaliser when he was floored on the edge of the Preston box with Antoine Semenyo to his right.

Seconds later the hosts went up the other end of the field before Emil Riis stunned the visitors by superbly volleying past the helpless Max O'Leary in goal.

After the full-time whistle, Pearson was hugely positive of his side's performance but vented his frustration towards the officials and referee John Busby.

He said: "We played well, we weren't ruthless enough with the chances we had. Our game management at the end should be better and we lost two points through an exceptional finish and what we have to learn to do is how to manage the situation.

"Having said all of that, Cam Pring is fouled. I get into trouble for saying what I think, whether the words make a difference to our wonderful FA, I don't give a damn about that to be fair.

"I think there needs to be a review into how they play and the performance of the officials. Will I get in trouble again? If they don't like hearing straightforward honesty, then tough."

Pearson was fined £5,000 earlier this month by the FA following comments towards referee Andy Davies in the wake of their 2-1 defeat to QPR at Ashton Gate. The City manager branded the official parks-football standard which was found to have been "improper or insulting and/or brought the game into disrepute".

Pearson was also critical of the decision not to award Semenyo a penalty after he appeared to be bundled to the ground midway through the second half.

The manager highlighted City's remarkable penalty record after data proved The Robins are the worst team for winning spot-kicks in the entirety of Europe.

"I've heard a few weeks back that we are the side that gets the fewest penalties in Europe, we could have had two today," he added.

"We've seen it (Semenyo) we've seen it in slower motion. I don't think anyone on our side of pitch sees anything but Antoine getting the first touch and gets bundled over.

"He gets pushed in the box - I'm wasting my time, wasting your time talking about it and I don't want it to sound like I'm making excuses - but what we're having to put with is substandard."

All eyes were on centre-back Timm Klose who made his first start for City and his first competitive appearance in six months after signing as a free agent on Thursday.

His immediate inclusion raised a few eyebrows with question marks lingering over his fitness but the 33-year-old put in an assured showing in the middle of a back three.

His performance particularly impressed Pearson was especially happy with the reassurance he added at the back.

"Timm Klose got through 90 minutes today, looked very comfortable, he's probably not feeling that, he's probably feeling very stiff," he said. "He did what we expected him to do, gave a calming influence and utilise the players around him too.

"The best thing to say about centre backs is when you don't really notice them in the game, you know that they've played well. They're defenders that are always on their backsides or at full stretch. Defenders who don't spend a lot of time on their backside can read the game well and intercept - and for me, that's what it's about.

"It's nice to have different styles. Timm used his experience today."
