Staff at a new care home that opened in the middle of the first wave of the pandemic are celebrating, after Government inspectors named it as one of the best in the country. The Badminton Place care home, at Cribbs Causeway in Bristol, received an ‘outstanding’ rating in its first Care Quality Commission inspection - putting it in the top 3.5 per cent of care homes in Britain.
The care home is run by the Berkeley Care Group, who describe it as a ‘luxury accommodation’, and the new home comes complete with a hair salon, gym and cinema, as well as ‘fine dining’ for residents. Already the care home has hit the headlines before - last summer residents were treated to a show in the home staged by a group of drag queens.
Badminton Place opened in August 2020, at a time when care homes were at the forefront of the battle to stop the coronavirus pandemic. Since then, staff and residents have gradually been able to take advantage of all the care home has to offer, while staff work with a mix of residential care, nursing care, dementia care and respite care needs.

In its report, the CQC commended the home’s leadership and staff for their ability to meet residents’ needs, describing it as ‘exceptional and distinctive’. The report added that the management team were ‘determined and driven to deliver an outstanding service’, while staff knew ‘residents extremely well and understood their individual needs’.
Badminton Place has 71 ‘luxury state of the art en-suite bedrooms’ and a range of facilities. It even has its own residents’ choir.
One resident, Maggie Townrow, said the ‘outstanding’ award was well-deserved. “Before I came to Badminton Place I was dubious about living in a care home, but since I arrived I’m very happy,” she said. “The amenities and facilities are excellent, and the staff and management do all they can to make the residents happy. It’s a massive relief to my family that I’m so happy here. The CQC award is very well deserved,” she added.
The home’s general manager is Holly Caswell. “Over the past 20 months I’ve had the pleasure of working alongside some amazing people, and what we have built is truly special,” she said. We have a growing staff team that is continuing to create a thriving community at Badminton Place, and without all of their support we wouldn’t have been able to achieve this ‘Outstanding’ rating.
“Since opening, they have worked tirelessly to ensure that residents have the best experience possible. From food to free time to simply being able to live an independent lifestyle, we have put a lot of effort into making sure every resident feels a part of our community.
“The greatest reward for staff is seeing how much residents enjoy their time with us, but the ‘Outstanding’ rating and recognition from the CQC is the icing on the cake,” she added.
The company that run the home have eight others across southern England. Its chief executive Andrew Winstanley, said: “This ‘Outstanding’ award is testament to Holly and the whole Badminton Place team’s dedication to its residents. When it comes to residents’ experiences in our homes, Berkley’s focus is centred around attention to detail and ensuring our residents live well. Badminton Place is a shining example of this.
“We aim for the highest standards across all of our homes, and we are confident that our expanding portfolio of homes across the country will match the same high standards here at Badminton Place,” he added.
