Bristol bus driver says fostering is 'not all squeaky clean and happy but it’s worth it’

Making a difference in children’s lives has never been ‘squeaky clean and happy’ for foster carer, Alex Stephens-Kear, but it has provided a lifetime of memories and special moments. Fostering has reached a crisis point in the city with an urgent appeal by the Bristol City Council for more foster carers to provide homes with only 350 fostering homes and over 750 children in foster care.

Alex, who is a part-time bus driver, said he and his husband started as foster carers 11 years ago and has spoken about their lives as foster carers. He said: “My husband was in foster care when he was young. So we wanted to give back and help children who need it.

“After a couple of years into our relationship, we were settled and decided to foster and give children a home,” he said. The couple currently have three foster children and have fostered seven children over the years, with focus on children with special needs such as autism and attention deficit disorder.
