Chelsea’s chances of qualifying for the Champions League this season are all but shot after they slumped to seventh in the table following a turgid 2-0 defeat at Brighton. The Blues lined up in an experimental three-at-the-back formation at the AmEx and promptly discovered it was not a winning formula, as Ferdi Kadioglu opened the scoring three minutes in.
Jack Hinshelwood missed a one-on-one shortly before the break and Chelsea were slightly improved after it, but he was there to double the hosts’ advantage mere minutes into the second-half. The Blues could not find a way back into the match - even before Danny Welbecks’ late third - and have now lost five consecutive Premier League matches, failing to score in any of them.
The result brings the Blues onto a run of form the likes of which the club has not suffered since the Titanic was afloat, leaving many at the club searching for answers to some awkward questions. Catch up with the action as it happened below with Standard Sport’s dedicated match blog, featuring expert insight and analysis from Dom Smith.

Chelsea player ratings vs Brighton
22:09 , Arthur FerridgeDom Smith has gone to the trouble of rating the Chelsea players’ performances after defeat by Brighton.
Spoiler alert: none of them scored very highly.
FULL-TIME: Brighton 3-0 Chelsea
21:54 , Arthur FerridgeThat does it on the south coast. Fantastic performance from Brighton, but, goodness. Where to start with Chelsea?
Brighton 3-0 Chelsea
21:50 , Arthur FerridgeAcheampong comes on for Gusto and will play the four added minutes here.
GOAL! Brighton 3-0 Chelsea | Welbeck '90+1
21:50 , Arthur FerridgeWelbeck slides into the box and fires home from De Cuyper’s cross. Chelsea are down and out.
Brighton 2-0 Chelsea
21:49 , Arthur Ferridge90mins: Into the dying moments now, and Chelsea still show no threat of getting back into this match. Liam Rosenior will come under fire, but you have to ask questions of the players, too. They’ve obviously been poor today, too.
Dom Smith reports
21:42 , Arthur FerridgeChelsea fast running out of time to get back into the game. And I make that Champions League hunt over, just about.
Brighton 2-0 Chelsea
21:41 , Arthur Ferridge82mins: More Brighton substitutions now as Welbeck and Ayari replace Rutter and Mitoma.
Brighton 2-0 Chelsea
21:39 , Arthur Ferridge80mins: A poor clearance from Veltman falls to Guiu, who fires wide via a deflection from Van Hecke. The follow-up corner fails to threaten Verbruggen’s goal.
Brighton 2-0 Chelsea
21:35 , Arthur Ferridge77mins: Changes for Brighton now as Minteh is replaced by De Cuyper.
Brighton 2-0 Chelsea
21:35 , Arthur Ferridge76mins: Garnacho makes a run at goal after Guiu wins the ball and gets a shot away which is off target but has Verbruggen momentarily worried.
Brighton 2-0 Chelsea
21:31 , Arthur Ferridge73mins: Another thorough failure from Delap to fill the vacant shoes of Joao Pedro. He’s had such a poor season.
Let’s see if Guiu can take his chance in the limelight.
Brighton 2-0 Chelsea
21:31 , Arthur Ferridge72mins: And here come the Chelsea changes. Essugo and Guiu replace Lavia and Delap.
Brighton 2-0 Chelsea
21:29 , Arthur Ferridge71mins: And Gusto is almost immediately called into defensive action, standing in the way of Gross’ volleyed effort.
Brighton 2-0 Chelsea
21:29 , Arthur Ferridge70mins: Gusto finds some rare space in the box and looks to square for Garnacho, but Veltman materialises from nowhere to slide in and intercept the cross. Remarkable defending.
Brighton 2-0 Chelsea
21:27 , Arthur Ferridge69mins: Chelsea had a great first quarter-of-an-hour in this half but, after that Hinshelwood goal, have completely retreated again.
Guiu and Essugo should at least get the team’s collective step count up a bit. Their running metrics have, of course, been under scrutiny this week.
Brighton 2-0 Chelsea
21:26 , Arthur Ferridge67mins: Van Hecke heads wide from a Brighton corner.
Chelsea are preparing subs, with Dario Essugo and Marc Guiu coming on. Hardly inspiring personnel changes, you have to say.
Brighton 2-0 Chelsea
21:25 , Arthur Ferridge67mins: And Kadioglu forces another smart save from Sanchez! This shot comes from about 20 yards out and looks destined to nestle in the bottom corner, but a strong right hand from the Chelsea ‘keeper denies him.
Brighton 2-0 Chelsea
21:24 , Arthur Ferridge66mins: Another blistering Brighton attack comes down the left flank - Gusto is nowhere to be seen. Kadioglu breezes into the box and looks to bend one into the far corner, but Sanchez gets down to palm it away.
Brighton 2-0 Chelsea
21:24 , Arthur Ferridge65mins: The Brighton choir are in full voice tonight. “He’s one of our own, he’s one of our own. Liam Rosenior, he’s one of our own,” they sing.
The same name is featuring in the away ends’ song, but to a different tune.
Dom Smith reports
21:21 , Arthur FerridgeChelsea and Tottenham are by far the two worst London clubs in the Premier League right now. Chelsea have been appalling lately. I just don't see them turning this around from here.
Brighton 2-0 Chelsea
21:21 , Arthur Ferridge62mins: A Brighton corner is headed clear by Delap but only as far as Mitoma. He brings it down, flicks the ball over his marker with a tap of the heel and shoots narrowly wide.
He loves a goal against Chelsea, does Mitoma, and that would have been the pick of the bunch had he buried it.
Dom Smith reports
21:17 , Arthur FerridgeNightmare for Chelsea. They're 2-0 down now, just when they were starting to get back into the game. Hato makes a right mess of it, and Sanchez is beaten at his near post. Rosenior is under real pressure now.
Brighton 2-0 Chelsea
21:17 , Arthur Ferridge58mins: Minteh catches Cucurella with an accidental stud, and is booked. Perhaps harshly.
GOAL! Brighton 2-0 Chelsea | Hinshelwood '56
21:14 , Arthur FerridgeHinshelwood makes amends for his earlier howler! Chelsea want a penalty and while they appeal Brighton counter. Rutter shrugs off a challenge from Caicedo with ease before playing HInshelwood through and he puts a deft finish beyond Sanchez.
Brighton 1-0 Chelsea
21:13 , Arthur Ferridge55mins: BRIGHTON WANT A PENALTY! Veltman’s cross appears to catch Cucurella’s arm, but the referee is uninterested and VAR appear to have cleared the incident.
Dom Smith reports
21:13 , Arthur FerridgeChelsea, I'd wager, are slightly improved early in this second half, but they still are far from troubling Brighton's goal. A bit more intent is palpable but clearcut chances are definitely still lacking.
Brighton 1-0 Chelsea
21:12 , Arthur Ferridge54mins: Gross plays Mitoma into the box, and the Japan international turns on a dime before getting a snap shot away.
He drags it very narrowly wide.
Brighton 1-0 Chelsea
21:11 , Arthur Ferridge53mins: Fernandez whips a cross to the back post in search of Gusto, but Verbruggen gets there first.
Off the ball there, a coming together between Veltman and Cucurella to which the referee turned a blind eye.
Brighton 1-0 Chelsea
21:09 , Arthur Ferridge50mins: Chelsea have enjoyed 80 per cent of possession in the first five minutes of the second half, which must count for something.
They’ve moved into a back four here.
Brighton 1-0 Chelsea
21:07 , Arthur Ferridge48mins: Sanchez puts ANOTHER pass out of bounds! He needs to recalibrate - this is shocking stuff from the Spaniard.
Brighton 1-0 Chelsea
21:05 , Arthur Ferridge47mins: Better start from Chelsea here (high bar, I know). Lavia gets a shot away early and misses narrowly over.
2ND HALF: Brighton 1-0 Chelsea
21:03 , Arthur FerridgeBack underway!
Alejandro Garnacho is coming on for Chelsea here. Let’s see if that has any effect.
Dom Smith reports
20:48 , Arthur FerridgeA bruising half is brought to an end. Chelsea lucky to be losing by only one.
HALF-TIME: Brighton 1-0 Chelsea
20:47 , Arthur FerridgeThere’s the whistle. Would it be unfair to call that Chelsea’s worst half of football this season? There’s plenty of competition for that honour...
Brighton 1-0 Chelsea
20:46 , Arthur Ferridge45mins: The fourth official tells us that one minute will be added. Quite remarkable that Brighton only have one goal tonight.
Wesley Fofana is booked for a cynical (professional?) foul on Georginio Rutter.
Brighton 1-0 Chelsea
20:44 , Arthur Ferridge43mins: Sanchez, again, punts a long pass directly off the pitch. His distribution has been absolutely appalling tonight.
Dom Smith reports
20:43 , Arthur FerridgeChelsea are living so dangerously here. Brighton could be out of sight if they could finish...
Brighton 1-0 Chelsea
20:41 , Arthur Ferridge41mins: Chelsea counter and earn a rare corner, but cannot make anything of it. The ball is cleared to Chalobah, who sees a speculative shot blocked. That’s Chelsea’s first shot of the match, mind, and it comes courtesy of a centre-back.
Brighton 1-0 Chelsea
20:40 , Arthur Ferridge40mins: A creative diagonal cross from Rutter to Mitoma looks dangerous, but Sanchez gets down quickly to cut out the danger.
Brighton 1-0 Chelsea
20:38 , Arthur Ferridge37mins: Sanchez looks to play another quick ball out from the back and sends one long in search of Neto, but overcooks it so, so badly.
Brighton 1-0 Chelsea
20:37 , Arthur Ferridge36mins: Another huge cheer goes up as Gross dumps Cucurella into touch with a shoulder to shoulder challenge.
Brighton 1-0 Chelsea
20:35 , Arthur Ferridge34mins: Fernandez looks to release Neto with a long-ball but hesitates and sees his pass read by Kadioglu. Just not happening for the Blues, in any respect.
Dom Smith reports
20:31 , Arthur FerridgeStill Brighton find themselves in handsome control of this one-sided match. Chelsea not showing any signs of settling into it.
Brighton 1-0 Chelsea
20:29 , Arthur Ferridge28mins: A small coming together between Gross and Cucurella leads to some one-sided afters. The German has choice words for Cucurella, who looks thoroughly exasperated by the whole ordeal. The face of a man who is ready to hop on the coach home.
Another hour of this yet, Marc. Look lively.
Brighton 1-0 Chelsea
20:28 , Arthur FerridgePresented without comment:
Chelsea have now gone over 400 minutes without goal. They haven't even had a shot of any kind today (after 27 minutes).
— Nizaar Kinsella (@NizaarKinsella) April 21, 2026
Brighton 1-0 Chelsea
20:26 , Arthur Ferridge26mins: Vehement ‘boos’ as Cucurella and Sanchez get on the ball, though they make way for spirited cheers (jeers?) as the Spaniard pumps a long ball out of play.
Brighton 1-0 Chelsea
20:25 , Arthur Ferridge25mins: Delap wins a corner, but Pedro Neto is delayed taking it after the Chelsea striker shoves Kadioglu to the ground in the box.
The cross eventually comes, but Baleba gets to it first and clears the danger.
Brighton 1-0 Chelsea
20:24 , Arthur Ferridge23mins: Sanchez catches Gross’ delivery.
Brighton 1-0 Chelsea
20:23 , Arthur Ferridge23mins: Chelsea have been under the cosh for just about this entire match. Minteh gets on the ball and runs at Hato, sends him with a dummy and bends a shot wide via a deflection.
Here comes another Brighton corner.
Dom Smith reports
20:21 , Arthur FerridgeStunning miss, exceptional block, ridiculous error from Sanchez. What is it with supposedly good-at-distribution goalkeepers still being so capable of cocking up with the ball at their feet? It's been a theme throughout the season. Chelsea so lucky not to be 2-0 down.
Brighton 1-0 Chelsea
20:19 , Arthur Ferridge19mins: What happened there?! Sanchez passes the ball right to Baleba in the box! He squares for Hinshelwood, but Chalobah does well to get back and clear his shot off the line.
Brighton 1-0 Chelsea
20:17 , Arthur Ferridge16mins: Chelsea are all at sea - perhaps fitting given the seaside setting - but another smart move from Brighton ends with Rutter firing high and wide.
Brighton 1-0 Chelsea
20:16 , Arthur Ferridge15mins: As if this first quarter of an hour couldn’t have gone any worse for Chelsea, Moises Caicedo now appears to be nursing a sore ankle.
Brighton 1-0 Chelsea
20:15 , Arthur Ferridge14mins: Pedro Neto gets free and makes a run down the right flank, but slips and falls as he looks to beat his marker. Brighton counter with threat and Sanchez makes another fine save to deny Van Hecke’s header.
Brighton 1-0 Chelsea
20:14 , Arthur Ferridge13mins: A brief spell in possession for Chelsea ends as Chalobah hits a pass along the ground in search of Neto, but it rolls straight out of play.
Dom Smith reports
20:13 , Arthur FerridgeTruly, what can Chelsea honestly say is going well for them of late? Brighton heading sixth in the league as things stand. If it stays like this - and, yes, there's a lot of the game left to be played - they will leapfrog Chelsea. The hosts have started far better.
Brighton 1-0 Chelsea
20:12 , Arthur Ferridge10mins: Chelsea have now failed to keep a clean sheet in their last 11 Premier League matches. The last came 94 days ago against Brentford.
Brighton 1-0 Chelsea
20:09 , Arthur Ferridge8mins: Worth mentioning that the Blues have scarcely had a touch in these opening exchanges, and after Kadioglu’s strike have now lost their top-six berth. For the time being, that is.
Brighton 1-0 Chelsea
20:08 , Arthur Ferridge7mins: Joao Pedro, Reece James and Cole Palmer are all watching from the directors’ box.
Brighton 1-0 Chelsea
20:07 , Arthur Ferridge6mins: The broadcast cameras cut to a stony-faced Behdad Eghbali, who is surely regretting bothering to head south for this match and may soon be organising an early lift home.
Dom Smith reports
20:06 , Arthur FerridgeWhat a fantastic save originally, but Chelsea are already behind and things are looking just a little bit grim right now for them. Weak goal to concede. It's so simple. Free man from a corner.
GOAL! Brighton 1-0 Chelsea | Kadioglu '4
20:05 , Arthur FerridgeBrighton have the opener! Mitoma goes close to an opener and the Seagulls capitalise from the subsequent corner. No defender can touch the cross and it falls for Kadioglu to fire home at the back post.
Brighton 0-0 Chelsea
20:04 , Arthur Ferridge3mins: Gross curls a lovely cross to the back post and Mitoma is there to run onto it. All five of Chelsea’s defenders are caught out and the Japan international seems set for a near carbon-copy of Saturday’s goal against Tottenham but Sanchez does well to stop it.
Brighton 0-0 Chelsea
20:02 , Arthur FerridgeA lively start from the hosts who lump one up to Rutter. His cross is denied by Chalobah but falls straight back to him. He gets another ball in the mixer - this time Fofana is in the way.
KICK-OFF! Brighton 0-0 Chelsea
20:00 , Arthur FerridgeAnd we are UNDERWAY at the AmEx Community Stadium!
The players are out...
19:57 , Arthur FerridgeKick-off up next!
Team news reminder
19:50 , Arthur FerridgeWith ten minutes to kick-off, here’s a reminder of this evening’s lineups and what appears to be a Chelsea back five.
Brighton XI: Verbruggen, Van Hecke, Georginio, Minteh, Hinshelwood, Baleba, Boscagli, Mitoma, Kadioglu, Wieffer, Gross
Chelsea XI: Sanchez; Gusto, Fofana, Chalobah, Hato, Cucurella; Caicedo, Lavia, Enzo; Neto, Delap
Chelsea with three at the back
19:48 , Arthur FerridgeChelsea have only started with a back three twice this season.
Per Fbref, the first time was in that 1-0 Carabao Cup defeat by Arsenal.
The other was in the 4-2 FA Cup defeat of Wrexham, which required extra-time.
Nicky Butt: I managed Alejandro Garnacho - his attitude was a disgrace'
19:42 , Arthur FerridgeAlejandro Garnacho "got superstar status too quickly" and Chelsea are now paying the price, according to Nicky Butt.
The young Argentine, who is on the bench for Chelsea tonight, is facing questions over his future in west London, just months after joining from Man United in a deal worth around £40million.
Butt coached Garnacho when he was just 16 years old, and said of the player: "Garnacho was always a bit stand-off-ish; he had a high opinion of himself.
"I thought he had an edge about him. And when he got into the first team, I will just say what I think because I was there, he got above his station way too quick. He got superstar status way too quick.
"He got superstar status too quick and he obviously scored the bicycle kick which was phenomenal.
"Someone in that club or team at the time should have been swatting him down, and they might have been, and he ignored them. But the best thing Man United did was sell him because, forget his ability, and I don't think he is that great anyway, but I thought his attitude was a disgrace when he was at Man United.”
Dom Smith reports
19:39 , Arthur FerridgeIt's quite extraordinary, but here we are: Marc Cucurella's barber gave away key team news information this morning and is now doubtless more than a little concerned about getting his client in a bit of trouble.
The fantasy football community were the key beneficiaries of the information… as well as Brighton themselves who were presumably given extra hours to prepare for facing a team without Palmer and João Pedro.
Liam Rosenior: I feel backing from owners
19:35 , Arthur Ferridge“They [the board] have been supportive of me in our daily conversations, sporting directors involved.
“They've been magnificent in their support of me and the team. We're relying on them.
“We know we need to win games of football in the now. That doesn't go against what we're trying to do, which is give consistent success to this club in the long term.”
Rosenior's Brighton career
19:29 , Arthur FerridgeChelsea boss Liam Rosenior saw out his playing career at the AmEx Stadium.
He wore blue-and-white stripes between 2015 and 2018, making 51 appearances.
After hanging up his boots, he took up a coaching job with the club’s U23s.
Chelsea's last five results
19:22 , Arthur FerridgeChelsea last won in the league in early March. Here are their last five results, from most to least recent.
0-1 L vs Manchester United (PL)
0-3 L vs Manchester City (PL)
7-0 W vs Port Vale (FA Cup)
3-0 L vs Everton (PL)
0-3 L vs PSG (UCL)
What is on the line tonight?
19:16 , Arthur FerridgeChelsea have it all to lose here.
If Brighton win this evening, they will leapfrog the Blues and move sixth in the Premier League.
That could spell disaster for Liam Rosenior’s hopes of qualifying this club for the Champions League...
Where in the world are Joao Pedro and Cole Palmer?
19:11 , Arthur FerridgeDom Smith has the answer...
Click here to find out why Liam Rosenior has left two key forwards in west London...
Dom Smith reports
18:55 , Arthur FerridgeHuge teams news for Chelsea, which we first learned of when Marc Cucurella's barber accidentally shared the team news earlier today and then promptly deleted it.
Joao Pedro and Cole Palmer both missing from the squad for Chelsea in Brighton this evening in a must-win game for their Champions League hopes, which are already fading.
Huge performances needed from all of Rosenior's men, but particularly Liam Delap and Romeo Lavia on rare starts.

Chelsea predicted XI
18:15 , Arthur FerridgeChelsea predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Sanchez; Gusto, Fofana, Chalobah, Cucurella; Santos, Caicedo; Palmer, Fernandez, Neto; Joao Pedro
Doubt: Joao Pedro
Injured: James, Estevao, Colwill, Jorgensen, Gittens
Standard Sport prediction
18:05 , Arthur FerridgeChelsea’s form does little to provide hope that they can get a result against a Brighton side that is flying at the moment.
The concern for the Blues is not only the lack of goals, but failure to keep a clean sheet in the Premier League since January will make their task all the more difficult.
We expect Brighton to relish the chance to leapfrog Chelsea in the table, boosting their chances of European qualification, and ensure Rosenior does not enjoy his return to the Amex.
Brighton to win, 2-0
Brighton early team news
17:55 , Arthur FerridgeBrighton are set to be without Diego Gomez for the visit of Chelsea after the midfielder was forced off early against Tottenham with a suspected knee injury.
Gomez’s replacement in north London, Kaoru Mitoma scored a stunning goal but was later substituted after picking up a knock which makes him a doubt.
James Milner could return after missing the last two games, while captain Lewis Dunk is available again after serving a suspension for accumulating too many yellow cards.
Chelsea early team news
17:45 , Arthur FerridgeLiam Rosenior is hopeful top scorer Joao Pedro will be fit to face his former club after sitting out the Man United defeat with a thigh issue.
Enzo Fernandez should be fine despite requesting to be substituted late on against Man Utd, but Estevao (hamstring) is set to join Reece James, Filip Jorgensen and Jamie Gittens on the sidelines.
Levi Colwill stepped up his recovery from an ACL injury by featuring for the U21s last week, though is not yet in contention for a return to first-team action.
