Brighton vs Arsenal LIVE: Premier League result, latest updates and fan reaction

LIVE: Brighton vs Arsenal - (Arsenal FC via Getty Images)

Brighton vs Arsenal LIVE

A potentially pivotal night in the Premier League title race took place as Arsenal beat Brighton at the same time as Manchester City were held to a draw at home by Nottingham Forest. It's heating up at the summit and the gap now stands at seven points, though the Gunners have played a game more than City.

Arsenal appear to have steadied the ship following a recent wobble, now beating Brighton to follow up wins over Tottenham and Chelsea in response to dropping points in successive away games against Brentford and Wolves.

Bukayo Saka marked his 300th appearance for Arsenal with a goal inside the opening ten minutes and that proved to be the winning goal as the visitors, at times, rode their luck en route to a crucial three points. Brighton, meanwhile, have seen their winning run come to an end as the missed the chance to climb into the top half of the Premier League table. Follow the game LIVE with our dedicated match blog, featuring expert insight and analysis from Matt Verri at the Amex Stadium!

Somehow Arsenal still in front heading into the final ten minutes. Arteta has already used all three of his substitution windows and that is decent evidence that he knows his side have needed all the help they can get. He's been on the thinnest possible ice and Arteta has seen enough. Mosquera off before he gets a red card and Calafiori on at centre-back.

Brighton 0-1 Arsenal

63 min: Nearly an equaliser for Brighton but Wieffer’s plants his header straight at Raya. The Dutchman was left unmarked in the middle, either side of the Arsenal keeper and the hosts are level.

56 min: Small opening for Arsenal as Saka finds a little bit of space but fires an effort high and wide.

Matt Verri at The Amex

20:45 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Arsenal have defended like it's the 90th minute for almost the entire match. Can't keep the ball and just hacking it away. Surely this isn't sustainable.

Gyokeres' hold-up play this half - my word. It's like playing with a brick wall up front.

HALF-TIME

20:20 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Brighton 0-1 Arsenal

Brighton 0-1 Arsenal

20:16 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

45 min: Three minutes of added time.

Brighton 0-1 Arsenal

20:16 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

44 min: Brighton attack is stopped as Mosquera is pulled back by Hinshelwood who was making a forward run into a lot of space behind the Arsenal defence.

Brighton 0-1 Arsenal

20:10 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

39 min: Excellent recovery from Rice after losing possession near the touchline, gets back just in time to stop Gross from taking a shot on the edge of the box.

Matt Verri at The Amex

20:08 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Gabriel is keeping this Arsenal defence together almost by himself. Mosquera is getting very close to a second yellow card and Hincapie hasn't been quite as sharp as he has been recently. Gabriel, though, has been sensational so far.

Brighton 0-1 Arsenal

20:05 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

34 min: Zubimendi is back up on his feet but has to go off for 30 seconds after receiving treatment. Hinshelwood then plants a header wide.

Brighton 0-1 Arsenal

20:03 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

32 min: Worry for Arsenal as Zubimendi has stayed down following a tangle with Rutter. Arteta taking the time to get a message across to his players.

Brighton 0-1 Arsenal

20:02 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

31 min: Foul by Mosquera on Rutter, the Arsenal defender is already on a yellow card and Hurzeler is asking for another one to be shown.

Referee keeps his cards in his pocket.

Brighton 0-1 Arsenal

20:00 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

29 min: Not often Rice wasted a set-piece opportunity, but he has just so by getting too much on a shot which clears the top of the bar.

Matt Verri at The Amex

19:58 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Arteta very agitated with Hurzeler on the touchline, pointing his finger angrily at him. Brighton boss has been complaining to the fourth official a lot in the opening 25 minutes.

Brighton 0-1 Arsenal

19:56 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

24 min: Arsenal enjoying a bit of possession now, loads of touches for Rice in particular but Brighton win it back centrally with Baleba and then Rutter wins a free-kick.

Matt Verri at The Amex

19:53 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Arsenal are not playing well. No control of this match at all, Brighton are the team dominating and enjoying plenty of time in the Arsenal half. Defending has had a real last-ditch feel to it.

Brighton 0-1 Arsenal

19:49 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

18 min: Nice intricate play from Brighton with Rutter the focal point, he makes space for shot but his effort comes back off team-mate Kadioglu and the ball goes out for a goal-kick.

Matt Verri at The Amex

19:47 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Hurzeler's press-conference comments have had an impact. Brighton fans are very quick to boo every time Arsenal even slightly delay over a throw-in or goal-kick. Pressure being put on the referee to hurry things up.

Brighton 0-1 Arsenal

19:47 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

16 min: Brighton building up some steam and Rice does well to track Hinshelwood’s run into the box to make a headed clearance after Mitoma’s fine cross.

Brighton 0-1 Arsenal

19:44 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

13 min: Mosquera booked as Mitoma is denied an attempt at goal by a fine block from Gabriel.

Matt Verri at The Amex

19:42 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Perfect start for Arsenal. They've been fine getting into this position this season - it's that they then normally gift the opposition a way back into it. Need to be more secure here.

GOAL! Brighton 0-1 Arsenal | Bukayo Saka ‘10

19:42 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

10 min: ARSENAL LEAD!

Bukayo Saka celebrates but it's an awful mistake from Bart Verbruggen. Brighton keeper lets the ball go between his legs. Shot did take a nick off Baleba but he should save that.

Brighton 0-0 Arsenal

19:37 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

6 min: Chance for Arsenal down the right as Saka gets in behind the Brighton defence but he can’t pick out the run of Martinelli at the back post. Lovely first time pass from Eze to set Saka free.

Matt Verri at The Amex

19:34 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

The Arsenal habit of gifting chances to the opposition is still here, then. Awful pass out from Raya and Gabriel is there to get him out of trouble. Arsenal have made things so hard for themselves this season.

Brighton 0-0 Arsenal

19:34 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

2 min: Sloppy pass from Raya as he sells Rice short with a pass, gifting the ball to Baleba who attempts a lob but Gabriel gets back to make a clearance.

Arsenal send Man City response as key advantage emerges in title fight

19:10 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

It should be clear by now that if Arsenal are to win the Premier League title this season, it will be done the hard way, writes Matt Verri.

Earlier in the campaign there was talk of an early coronation, of Liverpool and Manchester City being off their best and the stage set for the Gunners to cruise to the top rung of the ladder.

Not so now. Arsenal are clawing their way towards the finish line in agonising fashion.

There are just nine league games left to play and if Arsenal win all of them, they will be champions.

Saliba absence explained

19:05 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

William Saliba is not involved for Arsenal against Brighton this evening because of a minor ankle issue.

Saliba scored the opener in Arsenal's 2-1 win over Chelsea at the weekend, but his absence from training on Wednesday raised concerns among supporters on social media.

Subsequently, the Frenchman has been left out of the matchday squad for the big Premier League match against Brighton.

It is not yet known whether Saliba will be available for Arsenal’s FA Cup fifth round tie away at Mansfield at the weekend, but he may have been rested anyway.

A blow for Arsenal to not have Saliba in the squad, of course, but Mosquera's performances when he has come into the side this season mean you would back him to fill that void.

No Odegaard again, but good to see Dowman back after an ankle injury.

Hurzeler dig

18:05 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler has called for Premier League referees to crack down on Arsenal's time-wasting at set-pieces.

The Gunners’ set-piece prowess has been a constant topic of conversation this season, as 16 of their 58 league goals so far this campaign have come from corners or free-kicks, but Hurzeler does not number among their admirers.

The German accused Arsenal of taking an unnecessary amount of time to set up their intricate set-piece plays, claiming they can spend up to 15 minutes per match organising themselves.

Mikel Arteta sends message to Arsenal fans

18:00 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Mikel Arteta has urged the Arsenal fans to stay patient during tight matches, and his players to hold their nerve even when the atmosphere is tense.

The Gunners are five points clear of Manchester City heading into the final nine matches of the Premier League season, but their title rivals do have a game in hand.

Arsenal kept their advantage at the top with a nervy 2-1 win over Chelsea on Sunday, surviving some shaky late moments despite playing the final 20 minutes with an extra man.

Fans voiced their nerves on more than one occasion, groaning at one loose Martin Zubimendi back pass and loudly urging William Saliba to show more urgency in possession.

When that noise was aimed at the Frenchman, Arteta turned around and raised his arms in an appeal for calm.

Brighton get back on track

17:55 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Brighton have now won back-to-back matches, following up an impressive 2-0 win over Brentford by beating Nottingham Forest 2-1 at the weekend.

The Seagulls had previously gone six games without a win in all competitions, and the pressure was seemingly growing on head coach Fabian Hurzeler.

Now, the Seagulls have a 12-point buffer over the relegation zone and will be targeting a top half finish.

Jurrien Timber makes 'anxious' Arsenal title race admission

17:50 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Jurrien Timber insists Arsenal will address the anxiety problems which are threatening to derail their Premier League title bid.

Arsenal closed out a 2-1 win against Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday to restore their five-point advantage over Manchester City at the top of the table.

However, Chelsea played the final 20 minutes with 10 players after Pedro Neto was dismissed, and Arsenal rode their luck to secure all three points, with David Raya producing a fine save to stop Alejandro Garnacho from scoring in stoppage time. Liam Delap also had a late leveller ruled out for offside inside a nervous Emirates Stadium.

And Timber, who scored the decisive goal for Arsenal, admitted: "You feel it, especially at the end. We stopped playing, which was unnecessary, especially when we had a man up."

Predicted Arsenal XI

17:45 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Mikel Arteta is unlikely to make significant changes against Brighton, with the trip to Mansfield on Saturday offering a chance to rotate.

There could be a tweak on the left, though. Leandro Trossard's form has dipped and Gabriel Martinelli looked bright off the bench against Chelsea, leading the counter that led to Pedro Neto's red card.

Ben White remains unavailable and Mikel Merino is a long-term absentee, but otherwise Arteta has plenty of options to choose from.

Predicted Arsenal XI (4-2-3-1): Raya; Timber, Saliba, Gabriel, Calafiori; Zubimendi, Rice; Saka, Eze, Martinelli; Gyokeres

(London Standard)

Why ripping up set-piece rules would actually be good news for Arsenal

17:40 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Ahead of Arsenal's trip to Brighton, Mikel Arteta found himself fielding questions on a very familiar theme.

With the Gunners scoring both their goals against Chelsea on Sunday from corners, the attention was once again on their set-piece record.

There is a strange context to the criticism Arsenal have faced. Rarely can any team have faced so much scrutiny and so many disparaging comments for being so good at something.

"Part of the job," was Arteta's blunt reply on Tuesday to the criticism.

In an ominous message to the rest of the Premier League, Arteta also said: "I'm upset that we don't score more and that we concede as well."

Score prediction

While Brighton seem to have recovered from a dismal start to the year, they will have their work cut out for them if they are to beat Arsenal here.

The Gunners are in fine form as they push on in their title charge, and show no signs of slowing as they do so.

They will be high on confidence after coming through a chaotic derby meeting with Chelsea last time out.

Arsenal to win, 2-0.

Brighton team news

17:15 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler has confirmed Yasin Ayari is in contention to return from injury against Arsenal.

A shoulder problem sustained in the 1-1 draw against Everton at the end of January has forced Ayari to sit out Brighton’s last four Premier League games and the FA Cup fourth round defeat to Liverpool.

Brighton welcome Arsenal to the Amex Stadium on Wednesday evening in the Premier League, seeking to dent the Gunners’ hopes of a first title in 22 years.

Hopes of a first win over Arsenal since May 2023 have been boosted after Hurzeler revealed that Ayari is an option and that there are no fresh injury concerns.

Arsenal team news

17:10 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Declan Rice is facing a late fitness test ahead of Arsenal’s Premier League match against Brighton.

The midfielder asked to come off against Chelsea last time out and was assessed after the match, but Arsenal are confident he has avoided any serious issue.

There is more doubt over Martin Odegaard, who is still yet to fully recover from a knee injury that he has been nursing in recent weeks.

Arsenal will also make a late decision on whether to include Kai Havertz in the matchday squad.
