Arsenal have received a monumental boost in their bid to win a first Premier League title in 22 years after stretching their advantage at the top to seven points with victory at Brighton.
Bukayo Saka’s ninth-minute strike proved the difference, cutting in from the right before firing a deflected effort that went through the legs of Brighton stopper Bart Verbruggen.
The game could’ve taken a completely different shape had Carlos Baleba capitalised on an early David Raya howler, who was lobbed after gifting the Cameroonian the ball but had his skin saved by Gabriel, there to head off the line.
And after staving off a Seagulls comeback for the rest of the contest, two separate roars were heard from the away end after the final whistle with title rivals Manchester City being held to a 2-2 draw by Nottingham Forest.

Mikel Arteta brushes off naysayers and critics as Arsenal win ugly at Brighton to stay on course for title
22:56 , Miguel Delaney at the Amex StadiumArsenal toil to just about do enough, but it may mean an awful lot more.
Mikel Arteta’s minimalism led to what was almost the maximum outcome on the night at Brighton, as a 1-0 victory ensured they went seven points clear with a game more played. The news that Manchester City had drawn 2-2 with Nottingham Forest was greeted by even greater celebration from the Arsenal travelling support than their own final whistle. Moments later, for the first time this season, they were singing “we’re gonna win the league”.
That might yet tempt fate but it’s hard to begrudge them given how big this felt for the season. It’s just that there have rarely been matches so potentially seismic that were so muted.

Fabian Hurzeler fumes at Arsenal time-wasting
22:30 , Will Castle“We have to accept that decision,” Hurzeler told TNT Sports when asked about a Brighton penalty shout before half time that got waved away. “It’s more for me that he handles the other things better.
“In general, the Premier League needs to find a rule because that’s not for football what Arsenal did there. That was more the point I made to him.
“I think everyone saw it and everyone has to make their own opinion. I said it before the game and we shouldn’t use too many words about this and more focus about the performance. We did well tonight.
“Give more yellow cards for time-wasting. Do you see a goalkeeper going down three times in a game?”

Bukayo Saka hails 'massive win'
22:15 , Will Castle"This feels like a massive win,” Saka told TNT Sports.
"We heard the fans celebrating out of nowher during the game so l sort of knew in my head that something had gone well in the other game.
"But we are just focused on ourselves."

Arsenal capitalise as Manchester City lose ground in title race
21:45 , Will CastleIt’s a good night all round for Arsenal.
At the Etihad, Manchester City dropped two crucial points in the title race as relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest twice came from behind twice to rescue a 2-2 draw.
A header from Rodri just after the hour put City back on course for victory after Morgan Gibbs-White cancelled out Antoine Semenyo's opener but Elliot Anderson levelled for a second time.
The result meant City fell seven points behind the Gunners at the top of the Premier League and Forest stayed out of the bottom three, albeit only on goal difference.

FULL-TIME! Brighton 0-1 Arsenal
21:40 , Will CastleArsenal have received a monumental boost in their bid to win a first Premier League title in 22 years after stretching their advantage at the top to seven points with victory at Brighton.

FULL-TIME! Brighton 0-1 Arsenal
21:30 , Will CastleArsenal pass another huge test in the title race and have gone SEVEN points clear at the top, with Manchester City dropping points at Nottingham Forest.
This feels pivotal.

Brighton 0-1 Arsenal
21:29 , Will Castle90+7 mins: Two potential chances to force the issue go begging for Brighton as Ayari’s free-kick from deep doesn’t reach the box, before resulting cross from the right goes all the way out for a free-kick.
That could be it.
Brighton 0-1 Arsenal
21:27 , Will Castle90+5 mins: After a bit of a scramble in the Arsenal box, the visitors come away with the ball and win a free-kick.
The away end breaks out into song. This could be a massive, massive night in the title race.
Brighton 0-1 Arsenal
21:25 , Will Castle90+2 mins: Veltman clatters (fairly) into Saka, leaving the Englishman in a heap.
The Brighton defender is eager to pull stand-in skipper Saka to his feet, who ironically shoves him back and causes him to hit the deck.
Arsenal’s players don’t get too riled up about the exchange. Maybe because after Gabriel Martinelli’s antics earlier this season, there would be a bit of hypocrisy to any complaints.
Brighton 0-1 Arsenal
21:22 , Will Castle90+1 mins: SEVEN added minutes for Arsenal to hold on.
Brighton 0-1 Arsenal
21:21 , Will Castle90 mins: Into the last minute of normal time.
Arsenal are winning, Man City are drawing. Could this be a night we look back on when the Gunners won the league?
Brighton 0-1 Arsenal
21:20 , Will Castle88 mins: SAVE! That would’ve sealed it!
Havertz is played into space and jogs his way into the area before drilling at Verbruggen’s near post, but the Dutchman is equal to it.
Brighton 0-1 Arsenal
21:18 , Will Castle86 mins: Arsenal have kind of killed the tempo of this game in the past 15 minutes - which is exactly what they needed to do.
Brighton will need to muster something out of nothing to find an equaliser at this rate. They’ve got no momentum.
Brighton 0-1 Arsenal
21:15 , Will Castle82 mins: All sorts of delays at the Amex, starting with a yellow card for Kadioglu after shoving Saka to the ground.
Saka and Welbeck then seem to share pleasantries while he walks to take the throw.
Nibbles all round.
Brighton 0-1 Arsenal
21:13 , Will Castle80 mins: The Arsenal fans are in full voice, understandably. Things are going their way across the board.
Meanwhile, there’s some changes to bring you.
Arsenal have looked to sure things up in midfield by bringing on Norgaard for Zubimendi, while it’s a triple change for Brighton.
Veltman, Ayari and Howell comes on for Wieffer, Baleba and Gomez.
Brighton 0-1 Arsenal
21:09 , Will Castle77 mins: Big news, Arsenal fans: Manchester City have been pegged back AGAIN!
Elliot Anderson levels for Forest, making it 2-2 on the night and leaving the door open for Arsenal to go SEVEN points clear.
Brighton 0-1 Arsenal
21:07 , Will Castle74 mins: CHANCE! That was a really nice move from Arsenal but Trossard will be very disappointed with his finish on the stretch, switching off at the vital moment to slice his shot out for a throw from inside the box.
Mocking cheers from the home fans towards their former player.
Brighton 0-1 Arsenal
21:02 , Will Castle70 mins: Here comes Brighton’s goal threat. Danny Welbeck, once of the Gunners, is on for Fabian Hurzeler’s men.
You get the feeling Arsenal fans won’t be too happy to see their former frontman.
Brighton 0-1 Arsenal
20:58 , Will Castle66 mins: Half-chance for Arsenal as Havertz carries the ball towards the edge of the box following a Brighton error, but Baleba gets back to block his shot.
Brighton 0-1 Arsenal
20:57 , Will Castle64 mins: Arteta with the smart decision to bring off Mosquera, who is replaced by Calafiori.
The Spaniard has been on a yellow since the 11th minute and could have been sent off on about three occasions.
Brighton 0-1 Arsenal
20:57 , Will Castle64 mins: Arteta with the smart decision to bring off Mosquera, who is replaced by Calafiori.
The Spaniard has been on a yellow since the 11th minute and could have been sent off on about three occasions.
Brighton 0-1 Arsenal
20:55 , Will Castle63 mins: Well, well, well. Developments at the Etihad.
There was elation for Arsenal fans as Morgan Gibbs-White equalised for Nottingham Forest against title rivals Manchester City - but it was brief.
City have retaken the lead six minutes later through Rodri.
As you were.
Brighton 0-1 Arsenal
20:54 , Will Castle61 mins: CLOSE! Minteh does brilliantly to leave Mosquera for dead coming in from the right, and his pull-back at the byline bobbles dangerously off an Arsenal body for a corner rather than an own goal.
Minteh could’ve even gone down under contact for a possible penalty - Mosquera, on a yellow, gets away with another blunder.
Brighton 0-1 Arsenal
20:52 , Will Castle60 mins: While Raya gets checked out, Arsenal have made two changes.
Havertz and Trossard have entered the fray with Gyokeres and Martinelli’s night coming to an end. A difficult return to the Amex for the Swede.
Looks like Raya will be OK to continue.
Brighton 0-1 Arsenal
20:50 , Will Castle58 mins: SAVE! Rutter connects on the half-volley and Raya has to get down well to his left to parry away the shot, which was bending away from him.
It’s a smart stop, but it might have come at a price. Raya is down and is complaining about his shoulder. This could be worrying
Brighton 0-1 Arsenal
20:49 , Will Castle57 mins: First opening of the second half for Arsenal as they work it to Saka in the box, who snatches at his shot and fires well over.
Arsenal are getting a change ready, with this game becoming more and more stretched.
Brighton 0-1 Arsenal
20:46 , Will Castle51 mins: Brighton are really ramping up the pressure - this is their best spell of the game.
They’re loading the Arsenal area with bodies and peppering the box with crosses. One drops kindly to Hinshelwood whose shot is blocked by Gabriel at close range.
Nothing clear-cut has fallen to them but the Seagulls are knocking on the door, that’s for sure.
Brighton 0-1 Arsenal
20:39 , Will Castle47 mins: Bright start from Brighton (fitting) who pinch the ball in midfield and break forward down the right.
A cross is whipped in to Rutter who doesn’t quite get his header right, nodding wide. He’d have required some effort to beat Raya from where he was, beyond the penalty spot.
BACK UNDERWAY! Brighton 0-1 Arsenal
20:36 , Will CastleWe’re off again!
Yankuba Minteh comes on for Kaoru Mitoma, who may have picked up a knock.
Something different for Jurrien Timber to contend with.
The teams are back out
20:35 , Will CastleSecond half is on the way - and Brighton look like they’re about to make a change...
Scores on the doors
20:31 , Will CastleAston Villa 1-2 Chelsea (HT)
Fulham 0-0 West Ham (HT)
Manchester City 1-0 Nottingham Forest (HT)
Newcastle 0-0 Newcastle (15’)
It’s going to plan for both from title challengers so far!

Bukayo Saka strike proving difference in cagey clash
20:28 , Will Castle

HALF-TIME! Brighton 0-1 Arsenal
20:22 , Will CastleThe first 45 ends with a bit of VAR drama, because of course it does.
Arsenal lead thanks to an early Bukayo Saka goal and have turned down the tempo of the game since.
Not much to shout about, to be honest.

Brighton 0-1 Arsenal
20:21 , Will Castle45+3 mins: Arsenal get a little bit caught by the quick throw that sends Mitoma away down the right.
He whips in a low cross aiming for Hinshelwood but it runs in front of him and away out left.
There’s then a penalty shout as Martinelli seems to tackle his man in the box - there’s a brief VAR check but nothing is given, to boos from the crowd.
And that’s half-time...
Brighton 0-1 Arsenal
20:18 , Will Castle45+1 mins: Three minutes added on in first half stoppages.
Brighton 0-1 Arsenal
20:16 , Will Castle44 mins: Brighton haven’t really had much of a sniff since that massive chance right at the start of the game.
The home fans are getting particularly frustrated with the referee, who doesn’t seem to be letting anything go. The stop-start nature of this match hasn’t helped Brighton gain momentum.
Brighton 0-1 Arsenal
20:12 , Will Castle38 mins: Wonderful tackle by Rice to prevent Mitoma from letting fly on the edge of the box, who picked up the ball from Rutter’s lay-off.
He’s been at the heart of Arsenal’s defensive work tonight.
Brighton 0-1 Arsenal
20:09 , Will Castle36 mins: Gomez tries to catch out Raya with a deep cross towards his back post but this time, the Spaniard is not lobbed and takes it with aplomb.
Brighton 0-1 Arsenal
20:03 , Will Castle31 mins: Mosquera could be considered quite a lucky boy, there.
The Spaniard, already on a yellow card, is turned by Rutter and could break in behind, only to be brought down.
You see those sort of fouls come with a booking - and Fabian Hurzeler is furious that Mosquera hasn’t seen a second yellow.
Brighton 0-1 Arsenal
20:00 , Will Castle29 mins: Set-piece opportunity for Arsenal wasted as Declan Rice bends his delivery straight over the bar from the left-hand side.
Brighton 0-1 Arsenal
19:59 , Will Castle26 mins: Arsenal have no urgency to force the issue and are currently content with ticking it about and waiting for the opportunity to open up.
There’s a glimmer that it’s about to come as Gyokeres, back at Brighton, receives it in the area and tries to pass it square to Martinelli - but his effort is intercepted.
Brighton 0-1 Arsenal
19:50 , Will Castle18 mins: This has been a good response to falling behind by Brighton.
They’ve had a lot of the ball and work it well into the box, finding Rutter who lets fly.
He’s unlucky to see his shot blocked by a teammate, hitting Kadioglu who was sliding across the floor.
That was travelling towards the bottom corner as well.
Brighton 0-1 Arsenal
19:47 , Will Castle13 mins: After what could have easily been a nightmare start for Arsenal who would have fallen behind if not for Gabriel on the line, the league leaders now have their early goal and are in a position to take full control of this game now.
You feel Saka was just as surprised as everyone to see his shot go through Verbruggen.

GOAL! Brighton 0-1 Arsenal (Saka, 9')
19:41 , Will CastleIt’s an absolute disaster for Bart Verbruggen!
Bukayo Saka, wearing the armband tonight, breaks the deadlock but there will be huge question marks over the Brighton keeper, who just lets the shot go through his legs.
It was nevertheless a trademark effort from Saka from the right-hand side, who proves if you don’t shoot, you don’t score.
Brighton 0-0 Arsenal
19:38 , Will Castle6 mins: Shaking off the jitters of that early scare, Arsenal get going with a nice move that sees Saka slipped in down the right.
He puts it into a dangerous area but Gyokeres is not there.
Brighton 0-0 Arsenal
19:35 , Will Castle3 mins: OFF THE LINE! Gabriel saves the skin of his goalkeeper!
Raya passes it straight to Baleba in an uncharacteristic howler from the Spaniard, with the Brighton midfielder quickly going for the lob.
His shot beats the keeper but the retreating Gabriel is luckily there to head off the line, conceding a corner.
Raya is one lucky boy...
KICK-OFF! Brighton 0-0 Arsenal

Mikel Arteta speaks on tonight's opposition
19:20 , Will Castle“[We won] against two very good teams and in two very competitive games,” Arteta said, reflecting on wins against Chelsea and Tottenham ahead of tonight’s meeting with Brighton.
“We wanted to turn things around after the feeling that we had with that draw [against Wolves] and we’ve certainly done that. Now we have to do it today.
“Brighton are a team that really stretches you. They are so comfortable on the ball. They do their processes in the first phase so well, they are so comfortable and they have very good players as well. So we know that for every team, when you play Brighton, it's going to be a really tough night.”

Mikel Arteta explains William Saliba absence
19:15 , Will CastleMikel Arteta has confirmed William Saliba misses out on tonight’s clash due to an ankle injury picked up against Chelsea.
“He turned his ankle against Chelsea,” Arteta said.
“He managed to finish the game somehow, but he was too sore to play today.”
On Cristhian Mosquera’s inclusion, he added: “He’s been great. Obviously Wilo is in the partnership that we normally play, but Cristhian’s showed that we can fully trust him.”

Jurrien Timber calls on Arsenal to overcome 'anxiety' in title race
19:13 , Will CastleArsenal defender Jurrien Timber has admitted the club must address the anxiety problems threatening their Premier League title bid after securing a crucial 2-1 victory over Chelsea.
"You feel it, especially at the end. We stopped playing, which was unnecessary, especially when we had a man up," he stated.
"It’s something we need to work on, and talk about as well. It has happened a couple of times this season already. We got through it before but there have been couple of times we didn’t.
“It is part of the game, the energy within the players, the crowd, the anxiety. It’s something we need to address and talk about, but we handled it well today."

James Milner interview: Jurgen Klopp told me to have a break when I retire – but then I’m running marathons
19:03 , Will CastleWill Castle spoke to James Milner last week after breaking the all-time record for most Premier League appearances...
Walking into Brighton’s Elite Football Performance Centre, I was swiftly approached by a member of the club’s communications team. “Have you got the frames?” he asked this bemused writer, who only had his phone, laptop and notepad with him. It turns out he was after a different Will; not from The Independent, but from Guinness World Records. We were both here for James Milner.
For Milner, his record-breaking 654th Premier League appearance was just another game. “Massive victory on the road, delighted for the boys and travelling fans, thanks for the support,” read his very ordinary Instagram post, with the comments limited, after Brighton’s hard-fought win at Brentford. No self-congratulations, no fuss. It was very run-of-the-Milner.
The 40-year-old had his priorities straight. “I’ve always just tried to get on with my job and keep my head down really,” Milner said, ironically surrounded by journalists – and the aforementioned GWR dignitary, adorned in the trademark blue blazer and tie – who had all congregated on the south coast to discuss his remarkable milestone. “I know obviously there’s been a lot of talk around this sort of thing, but for me, I just want to do my job and [was] especially pleased to get the win, that was so important for us at the weekend. So to contribute to that, that’s always number one.”

Danny Welbeck dropped as Brighton make three changes
18:28 , Will CastleBrighton switch up the team that eked out a 2-1 victory over Nottingham Forest on the weekend.
Danny Welbeck scored the decisive goal in that clash but will not start against his former club, with Georginio Rutter leading the line.
Veteran James Milner also moves to the bench in place of Carlos Baleba, while there is no signing of skipper Lewis Dunk in the squad, with Olivier Boscagli coming in at centre-back.
Declan Rice passes late fitness test
18:24 , Will CastleDeclan Rice has been deemed fit to start for Arsenal despite picking up a knock against Chelsea.
William Saliba, however, does not make the side after sustaining an issue against the Blues, so Mosquera starts alongside Gabriel in one of two changes from the win at the weekend.
Gabriel Martinelli also comes in to start, with Leandro Trossard among the substitutes.
Bukayo Saka captains the team in the absence of Martin Odegaard, making his 300th appearance for the Gunners.

Viktor Gyokeres returns to Brighton looking to continue away form
18:05 , Jamie BraidwoodViktor Gyokeres was on the books at Brighton for three years before never made a Premier League appearance for the Seagulls - now he returns as Arsneal’s No 9 and after finding some form on the road. According to Opta, the striker has been involved in six goals in his last seven away games for Arsenal in all competitions, having scored twice in the win at Tottenham.

‘It’s gone too far’: How the Premier League fell into a moral panic over set-pieces
Mikel Arteta issues defiant response to criticism of Arsenal’s reliance on corners
17:35 , Jamie BraidwoodMikel Arteta has defiantly addressed the growing debate around set-pieces in modern football, asserting his desire for Arsenal to score even more goals from dead-ball situations, despite leading the Premier League in this metric.
The Gunners have netted 16 times from corners this season, including both goals in Sunday’s victory over Chelsea, prompting pundit Chris Sutton to label them potentially the "ugliest" title winners if they go on to win the Premier League.
This comes as Liverpool boss Arne Slot recently voiced his frustration, claiming some Premier League matches are no longer enjoyable to watch due to the prevalence of set-piece tactics.
However, the Spaniard remained unapologetic, stating: "I’m upset that we don’t score more, and that we concede as well.”

Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler takes aim at Arsenal’s set-piece tactics ahead of Premier League clash
17:20 , Jamie BraidwoodBrighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler has voiced strong concerns over the lack of clarity surrounding corner kick rules, suggesting Arsenal are adept at exploiting these ambiguities to their advantage.
His comments come ahead of Brighton’s Premier League clash with the Gunners on Wednesday night.
Set-pieces have been a significant factor in Arsenal’s successful campaign, with both goals in their victory over Chelsea on Sunday coming from corners.
Hurzeler believes there are too many "grey areas" in the laws concerning dead-ball situations, which he claims Mikel Arteta’s side utilise for time-wasting.

Last time out: Arsenal strike through corners in big win over Chelsea
17:05 , Miguel DelaneyA corner turned for Arsenal in the title race? No one will be able to say for certain until the season is definitively concluded but this 2-1 win over Chelsea does feel like it will be held up as a defining game in a wider Premier League shift. All three goals came through set pieces, and none of them especially clean either. It was that kind of game, as Chelsea now have to dig in and turn a corner of their own.
Mikel Arteta disputed that the victory was “ugly” but he did talk about how all teams currently have to “suffer”.
Arsenal have endured a lot of that lately, and it’s one reason why they won’t especially care about debates on the nature of this win. They had to get through it, and through this period.

Last time out: Welbeck strikes in Brighton's win
16:50 , Jamie BraidwoodDanny Welbeck made it to double figures in the Premier League as Brighton won 2-1 against Nottingham Forest.
Back-to-back wins have now surely ended any lingering fears of Brighton being sucked into trouble following their recent sticky patch.

Declan Rice injury update revealed before Arsenal play Brighton
16:35 , Jamie BraidwoodMikel Arteta is hopeful that Declan Rice will be available to face Brighton in the Premier League on Wednesday as he offered an update on the midfielder’s fitness.
The England international asked to be brought off in the 76th minute of Arsenal’s 2-1 win over Chelsea on Sunday, with Arteta confirming he would need to be “assessed” ahead of the crucial trip to Brighton.
But Rice is doing “much better”, according to Arteta, as the Premier League leaders bid to maintain their five-point lead at the top of the table. Manchester City will host Nottingham Forest on Wednesday.
When Arteta was asked whether Rice could be available, he said: “I hope so. He was much better today. We haven't trained much as we only have two days to prepare for the game. Hopefully he's going to be better tomorrow.”

What is the Arsenal team news?
16:33 , Jamie BraidwoodMikel Arteta said he was hopeful that Declan Rice would be available after the midfielder asked to come off against Chelsea. Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard face late checks.
What is the Brighton team news?
