Hollywood actor Brie Larson will be making her West End debut next year in a brand new production of Elektra.
Directed by Daniel Fish, this is the first major revival of Sophocles’ Greek tragedy in over a decade, when Kristin Scott Thomas played the tragic title character at the Old Vic. This revival will be produced by Empire Street Productions, who recently worked on Jodie Comer’s Prima Facie and Slave Play.
It is also a UK premiere of poet Anne Carson’s translation of Sophocles’ millennia-old play. Performances will begin at the Theatre Royal Brighton in early January, before it moves to the Duke of York Theatre in London for an 11-week season from Friday January 24.
Larson has rarely appeared on stage before (her only other credit is a 2010 performance of Our Town), but she is one of Hollywood’s most recognisable actors, appearing in films like Captain Marvel, Room and the TV series Lessons in Chemistry.
“I couldn’t be more excited to perform in this Greek drama, or in better company collaborating with Daniel Fish and Anne Carson,” Larson said in a statement accompanying the news.
“Storytelling has always been the way I organize life, feelings and experiences. I look forward to sharing space with the wonderful West End audience while we explore this timeless story.”
Fish directed an acclaimed adaptation of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! which won the Tony Award for Best Musical Revival in 2019 on Broadway before transferring to the West End where it won the Oliver Award for Best Musical Revival in 2023. Fish was also nominated for the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical in 2019.
In addition to Fish, the creative team is set to include Doey Lüthi (Costume Design), Adam Silverman (Lighting Design), Max & Ben Ringham (Sound Design), Ted Hearne (Composer) Kate Godfrey (Voice & Dialect).
Tickets for the play go on sale from Wednesday October 2.
