Bride's horror as sister-in-law derails first dance with 'disrespectful' speech

A new bride says she was left in an uncomfortable situation at her own wedding after her sister-in-law chose to make a bizarre speech at the most inappropriate moment imaginable.

According to this displeased bride, she and her sister-in-law Lisa have never been particularly close, partly because Lisa is very religious while she is an atheist.

Things took a turn when she and her husband had been enjoying their first dance together, at which point her sister-in-law grabbed the mic from the DJ.

To the bride's horror, Lisa, began making a speech about how much her brother had changed since meeting his new wife, and how much she missed him.

Up until this point, Lisa had apparently been acting up throughout the reception, making "passive-aggressive" comments about the wedding and complaining about everything from the music to the food to the venue.

Although this had gotten under her skin a bit, the bride initially "tried to brush it off", mindful that Lisa had recently been through a divorce, and so likely was in a "foul mood". After the impromptu speech was finally over, however, she decided to confront her.

Recalling the hideously awkward moment in a Reddit post, the furious bride wrote: "During our first dance, Lisa came up and grabbed the microphone from the DJ and started giving a speech about how she and my husband used to be so close and how much she misses him and how much he changed since meeting me. How lonely she is now.

"She was laying it on thick like she was mourning my husband or something. I have to admit, at this point, I saw red. It was so inappropriate and disrespectful and it felt like she was trying to make the wedding about her instead of us."

After Lisa had wrapped up her speech, the bride let her know exactly how "disrespectful" she'd been, and ordered her to "stop it". This led to a heated argument and, ultimately, Lisa storming off.

The newlyweds didn't see Lisa for the rest of the evening, but, unfortunately, the drama is far from over. Although her own family is on her side, her new in-laws are now annoyed at the bride for "causing drama and ruining the mood of the reception".

Explaining the current situation, she continued: "They think that I should have just let it go and not confronted Lisa about her behavior. I feel like I was justified in standing up for myself and my husband on our special day.

"The mood was already ruined by her awkward speech interrupting me and my husband's first dance together. My sister-in-law won't talk to me and my mother-in-law has been repeatedly calling me and demanding I apologise.

"My husband has not really been helpful either. He hates any kind of conflict, especially with his mother."

One fellow Reddit user advised: "Your in-laws blaming you for causing drama says a lot about their family dynamic. Likely, your sister-in-law is used to getting away with her inappropriate behaviour due to the family never calling her out on it.

"Instead, they pressure the other person involved cause they know what your sister-in-law is like. A lot of families have someone they treat like that in my experience. Do not apologise. You did nothing wrong."

Another commented: "Ideally your friend or family member should have taken the microphone gently from Lisa and said, 'How about a toast to the happy couple!', or something like that. Then they could have kept an eye on her to save you.

"That didn't happen and you lost your temper, which is not great but is understandable. At this point, you owe no apologies to anyone. I hope your husband can try to understand how you felt."
