Bride jokes she thought husband to be had 'ghosted' her after meeting online

A bride has teased how she thought her now husband may have been ghosting her at the start of the relationship.

Cassie Thompson met her now husband Ciaran over in Brooklyn through dating app Hinge. Ciaran is originally from Shankill and the two quickly realised they lived very close to each other in New York.

They agreed to go on a date but Cassie was left confused after their conversation came to an abrupt halt online. Fortunately, Ciaran was not having second thoughts but had simply forgotten to tell his future wife he was travelling back to Ireland for a trip.

The two finally had their first date over pints upon his return. They got engaged shortly after Thanksgiving at a motorcycle track, much to Cassie's shocked delight.

She told Dublin Live: "We had plans to go on a hike the day after we arrived which was fishy because Ciaran hates hiking. About an hour into the hike he pulled me aside and got down on one knee and reached into his bag. I thought he was taking out one of the thanksgiving sandwiches that he packed so I was very much thrown off guard when he took out a ring."

The two decided they wanted to celebrate their nuptials in both the US and Ireland to include as many people as possible. The couple celebrated their Dublin wedding last month in Fallon and Byrne, which was documented by wedding photographer Katie Kavanagh.

The couple had so much fun that they had to return to the wedding venue the next day after leaving their mobile phones behind. Here is Cassie's testimony about her big day in full.

Who is your partner and how did you meet?

Ciaran and I met in 2018 in Brooklyn on Hinge! We coincidentally lived up the block from each other and decided to go on a date after a few days of talking.

He failed to mention that he had a trip back home to Dublin when we first started chatting so I thought he was ghosting me, but as soon as he was home we made plans to get some pints and the rest was history!

Tell us about the proposal.

The day after Thanksgiving 2020 in the US Ciaran had plans to go to Austin, Texas for a motorcycle track. Austin is my favorite city so he asked me to come tag along.

I was hesitant to have a weekend with motorcycle dudes but he convinced me that we would have lots of free time to hang out. I finally gave in so we packed up some Thanksgiving leftover sandwiches and hopped on a flight after dinner.

Tell us about your wedding.

We actually had two weddings! A small civil ceremony in New York last December so some US folks could celebrate with us, and a bigger celebration in Dublin this past March. We had about 50 people from Ireland and 50 family and friends travel over from the States for the big day. It was my parents first time in Europe so it was a huge deal!

I was a bit nervous planning a wedding overseas but our vendors could not have made it easier for us! We had our wedding at Fallon & Byrne which was totally our style, the room is the perfect size and the food is to die for. We moved over to the Stags Head for the cocktail hour while F&B converted the room for dinner, and it was an absolute blast!

Katie Kavanagh was our photographer and captured the day perfectly. Our favorite part of the day was when she pulled Ciaran and I into a pub for a pint before the ceremony.

It was the only time we really got to relax and spend time just us two. Ciaran’s family friend Lisa Nevin did our flowers which were gorgeous and really tied the whole room together.

Dermot Kelly who is the house DJ at Fallon & Byrne was also perfect, he took all of our requests into consideration and everyone was on the dance floor all night.

What was the best thing about the build up to the big day?

Since we live in New York we spent the week leading up to the wedding with Ciaran's family in Shankill. During that week we were able to spend time with everyone we don’t get to see very often, especially his nieces and nephews.

A few days before the wedding all of our friends and family from the States started to trickle in so it was so great to show them around Dublin and get excited for the big day!

What was your outfit/ the bridesmaids dresses like?

My dress was a lace, long sleeved, V-Neck dress from BHLDN and my bridesmaids dresses were moss-green sleeveless dressed with a high neck line, also from BHLDN.

What are your tips for other brides?

Enjoy the process! Don’t focus on everything being perfect because it will be impossible for everything to go as planned.

But even if there are some surprises they will be for the best! Also, make sure to carve out some time with your partner to catch up and just enjoy the time together. The day can get mad!

Would you do anything differently?

Honestly, no. We did forget our phones at Fallon & Byrne the night of the wedding so the walk back there in the morning was bleak. But besides that, everything else was perfect!
