Brianna Ghey: Hundreds gather in Dublin to pay tribute to trans girl killed in UK

Hundreds of people descended upon the Dublin city centre to pay tribute to Brianna Ghey, who was killed in the UK.

The 16-year-old trans girl was found with stab wounds in a park in Cheshire on Saturday. Following the horrific killing, a number of vigils in Ireland and the UK were held in memory of the schoolgirl who has been remembered as "beautiful, witty and hilarious" by her family.

A large crowd gathered at the Spire in Dublin last night to pay tribute to Brianna whose life was tragically cut short. Sharing pictures of the event, which was organised by Trans & Intersex Pride Dublin, Sinn Fein councillor Daithi Doolan said: "Say her name. Solidarity with Brianna Ghey, her family, friends, and the wider Trans community. Great to see hundreds of people at her vigil tonight."

Other vigils were also held in Belfast and Derry last night with more planned in Kilkenny (today at 7pm at the Town Hall), Limerick (Monday at 5pm at Brown Thomas Statue), and Cork (Sunday, 12.30pm at Daunt Square).

The police in the UK are now investigating if Brianna's killing could have been a hate crime after previously saying there was no evidence to suggest itwas "hate-related". Brianna's friends have said that she had suffered from bullying for years prior to her death.

Brianna's family paid a heartbreaking tribute in a statement. They said: "Brianna was a much-loved daughter, granddaughter, and baby sister.

"She was a larger-than-life character who would leave a lasting impression on all that met her. Brianna was beautiful, witty, and hilarious.

"Brianna was strong, fearless, and one of a king. The loss of her young life has left a massive hole in our family, and we know that the teachers and her friends who were involved in her life will feel the same."
