Brian Sorensen gives honest Everton 'learning curve' verdict after Aston Villa win

Everton boss Brian Sorensen was pleased with his team’s performance against Aston Villa on Saturday, but says his side are yet to be at their best for an entire 90 minutes.

The Blues secured a hard-fought, but deserved, 1-0 win in the West Midlands on Saturday afternoon. After last week’s disappointing defeat to Chelsea, it was a much-improved display as they secured a crucial three points.

Lucy Graham scored the only goal of the game as she finished a well-worked move involving Jess Park and Gabby George. Villa had their moments, but were kept at arms length for long periods of the game.

Sorensen was happy with Everton 's performance on the day, but believes there is more to come from his team moving forward.

“Yes (happy with the performance) in big parts,” he said post-match. “It was okay. We haven’t put 90 minutes together how we want to yet but hopefully that’s to come.

“In the last part of the game we were in control, they only had two shots on goal (on target) the entire game so that’s pleasing. Time will benefit us as we get more and more together.

“When we get in those situations where we have a 1-0 lead, how we put the game to bed and in our favour. But that’s a learning curve and we are happy today with the win. I am pleased and we did good.”

Everton have had a strong start to the 2022/23 campaign with three wins from five so far. Their only defeats have come at the hands of current champions Chelsea and West Ham in their opening game.

Sorensen believes his team are on the right track, but refused to think too far ahead when questioned on their aims for the season. He cited how quickly things can change in football and believes lessons from the past have been learned.

“We can be everything from being in the top four to battling for eighth, ninth or tenth if it doesn’t go our way,” he continued. “That’s two or three injuries to vital people, it can easily shift so I’m not so concerned about where we’re going to end up.

“This is the year for us to rebuild and get things right. If we can put in good performances consistently, be in every game for 90 minutes, then let’s look at it on the last day how things stand. We’re not aiming for anything because we learned that from last year I think.”
