Brian Sorensen confirms Everton transfer stance ahead of FA Cup return

Brian Sorensen has confirmed Everton won't be doing any more business in the transfer market ahead of next week's deadline day.

Last month, the Dane told the ECHO he was expecting a "slow and easy" January window and insisted he was "really happy" with his current squad after bolstering his ranks with ten new recruits last summer. Despite links to new Aston Villa duo Jordan Nobbs and Lucy Staniforth earlier in the window, Everton's primary bit of business this month has been tying down Fortuna Hjørring loanee Clare Wheeler to a permanent deal at Walton Hall Park.

Sorensen has also been afforded another option in the middle of the park with the return of summer signing Sara Holmgaard from her own loan spell in Denmark, while the departure of Brazilian winger Gio - who was recalled by parent club Arsenal - raised the possibility of Everton looking to bring in another attacker before January 31st. However, the Blues boss confirmed on Thursday that the club will not be making any more signings, with his existing squad looking to continue to build on their impressive recent form in the Women's Super League.

"(Our business) is done," Sorensen said. "We had a couple of players that we were looking at but they didn’t meet the criteria for the points in terms of getting them in and getting a visa so it is how it is.

"We are still of course looking but it’s more for the next window. We’re happy with the squad that we have and we don’t need to do a big change.”

Certainly, if recent performances are anything to go by, there wasn't a need for major surgery on Sorensen's squad this month, with Everton currently sitting fifth in the table after three consecutive WSL victories. But the Blues will put their league ambitions on hold this weekend when they welcome Birmingham City to Merseyside in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Darren Carter's side are currently fifth in the Championship, having been relegated from the WSL last season. However, Sorensen is expecting a tough game when the two sides face off at Walton Hall Park on Sunday.

“We’ll try to do the very best we can so we’ll play the strongest team available," he said. "We don’t take that game easily but I also think we should be the favourites.

"We’re at home at Walton Hall Park. We want to build a little bit more confidence into the team. It’s going to be a tough game because (Birmingham are) able to defend well and they have good transitions and they want to keep the ball. It will be a tight game but we should have the quality to come out on top."

Everton made it all the way to the FA Cup final back in 2020 but were beaten in extra-time by Manchester City. It was City who got the better of the Blues again in the fifth round last season, but Sorensen believes his new-look side have what it takes to go on a good cup run this term.

"We don’t have the budget to compete for titles in the league but a cup run you can always do well. If we get through and drawn against Arsenal or Chelsea or so on it’s going to be hard but that’s why it’s so fascinating with the cup.

"You can meet teams you don’t usually meet and on the day you can do something. We’ll try to do the very best we can so lets see if we can go as far as possible."

Everton Women play their home games at Walton Hall Park and will take on Birmingham City at 1pm on Sunday, January 29. Tickets are free for Season Ticket holders, Lounge and Official Members. Tickets, priced at £4 for juniors and £8 for adults, can be purchased here.
