Singer Brian Kennedy feels “so lucky” after getting the all-clear in his cancer scan for the fourth year in a row.
The 56-year-old was diagnosed with rectal cancer in 2016 and told how he is grateful to be alive and healthy after a tough few years.
And while he was thankful to receive such good news, Brian admitted he did not celebrate the milestone following the death of a friend.

He said: “For the fourth year in a row I have just gotten the all-clear from my cancer scan. I feel so lucky, my goodness me.
“But you know what, I didn’t [celebrate]. It’s weird, it’s kind of bittersweet.
“Can I just give a shout out to Grainne Carr in Donegal, who sadly died last week. Her family, I send big love to them.”
Hearing tragic news of people losing their lives to cancer makes Brian even more appreciative of his health.
He told Tommy Bowe and Muireann O’Connell on Ireland AM: “When you hear things like that it makes you feel even luckier.
“I was walking back to the hospital thinking about Grainne, and all of the other people who didn’t get such good news. Truthfully, I did want to shout it from the rooftops, but at the same time, I knew I couldn’t. So I called up my besties and said I’ve got good news, here it is. So I’m [celebrating] slowly but surely.”
The Belfast man explained that if he gets the all-clear next year, he doesn’t need to go back to the hospital for annual cancer scans.
Brian said: “[After five years] then they say, ‘OK, you don’t have to come back in and see us unless you want to. One more... I’m almost there.”
