Brian Burns reports to Panthers training camp amidst ‘ongoing’ contract talks

No one seemed to have captured any visual evidence of Brian Burns reporting to Carolina Panthers training camp on Tuesday. But he’s there, and he’s fabulous.

As noted by both Mike Kaye of The Charlotte Observer and Darin Gantt of Panthers.com, the two-time Pro Bowl pass rusher is present at Wofford College in Spartanburg, S.C. Gantt also wrote that Burns, who underwent ankle surgery this April, passed his physical upon his arrival.

General manager Scott Fitterer then spoke with media members about Burns and his seemingly imminent contract extension.

“Those’ll be ongoing conversations,” Fitterer said. “There’s no timeline to it. They’ve been good conversations. He’s represented by a great agent. And it’s not like we have to say, ‘Hey, listen, it has to be done by this time or that time.’ We’ll just keep talking. When the time’s right, and we make a deal where it’s right for him and right for us, that’d be great.”

Burns is currently in the fifth and final year of his rookie deal, but he is likely to stick around in Carolina for the long-term.

“And he’s a big part of the organization and we’re excited to have him,” he added. “We love havin’ Brian around. He’s really grown as a leader. Not just as a player, but as a leader. He’s matured. He’s one of those guys you just love being around.”

Those talks could go even further based on the situation between the San Francisco 49ers and Nick Bosa, who is expected to reset the pass rusher market some time this summer.
