Brexit 50p coin sells for £10k on eBay - and there's still 10million more in circulation

A Brexit 50p coin has sold on eBay for an eye-watering £10,000 by a person living in Glasgow.

Many people will be encouraged to flick through their loose change to find if they too have an unusual coin, which could be bought by an enthusiast for considerably more than its face value.

The 50p Brexit coin was issued to mark the planned exit of the UK from the EU, and was sold on February 6 by one very lucky Glaswegian.

Described as being a 'very rare find' by the seller, the coin was launched on the date of Brexit on January 31, 2020 with "Peace, Prosperity and Friendship With All Nations" written on it.

But you might be in luck to find one, as there are an estimated 10million still in circulation, reported GlasgowLive.

The 'Queen Elizabeth II 50p: UK Withdrawal from European Union' coin was issued in 2020.

Change Checker said: "On the 31st January 2020 the United Kingdom left the European Union – over three and half years after the Vote.

"This departure is possibly one of the most historically significant events to happen in modern history and to commemorate this day, The Royal Mint issued this Withdrawal from the European Union 50p. It is the only official United Kingdom coin to commemorate the occasion.

"The reverse design features messaging ‘Peace, Prosperity and Friendship with all nations’ alongside the official withdrawal date, 31 January 2020."

Change Checker expert Alexandra Fiddons previously told The Mirror: "The 50p was teased for a long while before the UK's official exit from the European Union and when it was officially released into circulation, people were eager to snap them up for their own collections.

"This coin marks an incredibly significant moment in British history and it's possible that people who aren't usually interested in the hobby, may have been tempted to secure this 50p to commemorate the event forever."

Speaking on what makes a coin 'rare', she said: "Sometimes we see coins listed for prices well above their face value on the secondary market.

"Sometimes this is driven by low mintage figures, meaning there are fewer coins for people to collect, but it can also be driven by the popularity of the theme."

It comes as a Paddington Bear 50p coin from 2019 was auctioned on eBay on February 13, and fetched £1,500. It is said to be the 14th rarest 50p coin, featuring the famous bear standing outside Buckingham Palace and waving a Union Jack flag.
